Hi all,Just about to install a new pair of JCC/EMGO pistons ,but there are no markings on the rings as which way is top/up.
Both top rings are cast and the inside of these rings has a chamfer, does this go up or down?
Thanks
Brett
Ditto.
Here is a Total Seals tech article that shows some pic's on conventional rings. Standard barrel rings with chamfer up. I happen to have learned this one by the experimental method.
Correct ring installation is critical. The top ring
will have a shiny gray edge. When the top and 2nd
ring has a dot, install dot side up. Unmarked top rings
with an inner bevel install with bevel up. Unmarked
2nd rings with inner bevel install with bevel down.
Narrow rings (1.0/1.2mm) that aren’t marked or
beveled can be installed with either side up.
Most ring installation guides that I've seen follow this formula.
The following link seems to be most comprehensive. See the little illustration about half way down the page on the right hand side where it gives examples. The only times you install an inside bevel down is when it is gapless or "reverse torsional". So unless you can tell whether it is "reverse torsional" you are out of luck. Maybe this is a question you can pose to Emgo if they still exist. I don't believe that Emgo makes gapless rings and my hunch is that you are not dealing with a reverse torsional second rings so the bevel faces up on the top ring and most likely faces up on the second ring. Again, that is the way I have seen them in most applications.
Broken link removed
The following URL seems to only add to the confusion as the text states one thing yet the illustrations show another so I would look at it for reference but disregard it.
On the first and second rings there is a chamfer on the inside. I believe that this chamfer goes up as indicated by the diagrams from the link of the earlier post.
Thanks to all who posted answer to my question.
There was not a dot on the rings anywhere.
I am a bit concerned about the circlips as they seem to be too small, as they are not a tight fit in the groove. so I will chase up the next size.
Could spoil my day if they come out.
