Electronic tacho and speedo

My 1974 Commando have the long cupholder for the speedo and tacho .
I do not like the look , think its to big and bulky .
The Electronic units seems to be only 33 in debth .
Have any cut Down the cupholder ?
Someone have a Pictures from the backside of the Electronic units ?

The new Smiths Electronic Gauges are made to the original dimensions as their original Magnetic and Chronometric gauges. The longer gauge holders require a stand off kit to make up the additional length of the longer holder. The diameters are the same as the original. See accessories page on our website. The longer holders had allowed for a boot or cap to protect the bottom of gauges.

I cut down a pair of 850 clock holders for the elec speedo/tach, they are now 1-3/8" tall, they could be cut a further
1/4" or more but then the start to look a bit funny I think, remember the electronic gauges have no mounting points like the Smiths do, actually they have no provision for mounting them I was advised when I bought them to use silicone to hold them in place.

Buy a set of short cup holders that came on the earlier Commandos, RGM sells them and not that expensive, I replace my long ones for the short one as I think they look better, but I did break one of my orginal ones when my bike fell over.

The Smiths electronic gauges have the same mounting arrangement as the stock gauge. Jim

Hi Madass,

Not sure what "electronic gauges" you are referring to but the new Smiths gauges do have electronic internals and are dimensionally identical to the older mechanical ones. The mounting studs are in the same location of 6 and 12 o'clock. They will drop in any of the original gauge holders. So sounds like the ones you have are off market copies and having to use silicon to hold them in place doesn't sound like an ideal situation. Some of the copies are off also in size and won't fit properly in the original gauge holders. Just wanted to clear up any confusion between the "electronic gauges" you have without any mounting studs to the new Smiths "electronic gauges" made to original specs including the mounting studs.

You need the speedo/tacho mounted out in the breeze naked, so to speak,
using the old clockholders type brackets.

Tom, the OP Michael didnt mention Smiths electronic gauges just electronic gauges so I assumed he was talking about the electronic gauges that have a similar Norton face and are marked and sold by Legendary cycles which are and advertised as being 33mm in depth which the OP mentioned, the Smiths gauges are 45mm in depth and certainly more than 33mm under the bezel.

Hey Michael,

Something to consider....if you cut the gauges down, you will also take off the mounting flange on the bottom. If you do this you remove the mounting points for the stock gauges and will no longer be able to bolt in a original magnetic or new Smiths electronic gauge. You would have to mount some sort of straddle strap on the bottom which may not look that great. I would agree with Ashley and buy either a new reproduction or original shorter gauge holder.
