I recently purchased an early Fastback tail section from AN. I haven't received it yet but I have a couple of questions regarding fixing the badges to both the petrol tank and the tail section.
Regarding both, I have a non-painted Fastback tank from RGM in a white color similar to the AN tail section.
I am concerned regarding what I should tell the painter to do regarding the badge depressions. Paint or no paint. Prime or no prime.
Also. what adhesive should be used to secure the badges?
I contacted AN and received an email telling me that they couldn't advise me.

Has anyone here dealt with this issue?

Thanks,
Ed

The original badges had a square (about 1” x 1”) flexible adhesive pad. I don’t know what adhesive it was but, on my tail fairing, it is still holding on very well after all these years. I guess that a brittle adhesive would not have lasted as well but then you don’t need it to last 50+ years so an epoxy adhesive should do. The original petrol tank was destroyed in a fire and replaced with a big yellow Norvil thing but the badges on the original were the same as on the tail one.

Thank you Hybridracer,
Out of curiosity, how do you know about the adhesive pads? Were/are you able to remove the badge(s) to see the pads? Also, do you know whether the pads were applied to the finished gel coat paint?

Thanks,
Ed

Tell your painter to paint the whole tank, it will be fine. The badges on my '68 Commando are stuck on with engine grade RTV, & have remained stuck for years. You could also use 3M VHB tape.

I also had a scrap tank (accident damaged) with one badge still on it which I prized off complete with the pad. I can’t be sure about the tank surface finish under the adhesive after 52years but I think it was the same paint as the finished tank.
