I have a 69 Commando drive side casing I am trying to remove the roller bearing shell from the drive side crankcase I have heated it up quite hot with a torch and it will not pop out. Any ideas would be helpful. I have never had this problem before and I am concerned about overheating the casing.

If you arc weld a bead around the inside of the outer race, it will shrink and drop out, this also works well for things like tapered steering head bearings where there is limited room to get behind the outer race.

I use my wok burner on my gas stove to remove my main bearings I set the case over the burner and it heats the case evenly the bearings just fall out by themselfs I then flip the case over and drop the new bearing straight in, have never had any problems doing it this way and have replaced a lot of main bearings over the years, with a touch its not heating the case evenly maybe.

This. Right here.

I guess I am pretty lucky. My wife puts up with me when I put stuff like this in the oven. Kinda nice to have it thermostatically controlled. Set it at 350 and you are within safe margins for the case. I just lay mine in so that the race will drop out when the temp gets high enough. I listen for it to drop and know its done!

I removed my original bearings by putting the cases in the household oven on a piece of plywood which was a technique I read about somewhere a very long time ago. I can't remember the recommended temperature, but my friend was with me while I was doing it. As I explained to him that I had read that the bearing will fall right out once the case is hot, I heard a "clunk" from the oven and sure enough the bearing dropped out onto the plywood. I put the other half of the case into the oven and a few minutes later another clunk sounded and the old bearings were out...

Assembly was similarly magical. Cases in the oven, bearings in the freezer. The frozen bearings dropped right in like they were a loose fit, and once in place in the hot crankcase for 30 seconds, they fit so tight they weren't going to move. No ovens were harmed in the process, however the next roast beef I made in that oven tasted a little like 50 wt oil ;)

I use a 250 degree oven (pre-heated) for 15 minutes (put new bearings in the freezer ice tray beforehand). Typically they fall out somewhere between 12 and 15 minutes, otherwise dropping them on the wooden front porch from about 18" pops them right out. Frozen new bearings will absolutely drop right in place immediately after removing any remaining (hot) residue.

In the two or three times in over 50 overhauls that they DIDN'T pop out, I had to weld a bolt across the outer race, flip the case over, then tap it right out.
