Do I have to pull the gearbox

I have a MK III. I have an irritating oil drip from the front of the gear box. I have narrowed it to an O-ring on the shaft for the Quadrant where it comes out the front of the gear box and is held in place by a washer and spring clip. It is directly behind the sleeve that connects the shifter cross shaft with the short coming out of the other side of the gear box.

If I pull the primary cover off, pull the long shifter shaft with it, can I pull the connector sleeve and it's rubber boot of to allow access to the clip holding the quadrant in place, or do I have to take the gear box out of the bike?

I don't know if it's different on a Mk III, but you wouldn't have to pull the box to do so on a pre-electric start.

I know because after pulling the box, rebuilding, and reinstalling, I found I'd mistimed the cam plate to the quadrant.

I was able to pull everything out (except the layshaft and sleeve bearing, which didn't need to be moved, and couldn't be without removing the drive side stuff again) in situ to fix this. My quadrant attaches with a bolt instead of a circlip, but other than that I would think it's pretty much the same process.

Good luck.

You may not have to do that?

With the starter motor removed, and the rubber boot pulled off the connector, it looks as if there's just enough room to remove the circlip with a set of 90 degree offset circlip pliers, and also the washer and O-ring without having to pull the cross shaft and connector out of the way first?

Do I have to pull the gearbox

I believe the coupler is there to allow the parts to come out without removing major sub-assemblies.

Thanks, I'll givt it another shot. I took the starter out and tried it before, but with the rubber boot on the sleeve. I couldn't get any snap ring plier in there because of the sleeve. I thought if I pulled the long shift shaft and the sleeve off, I would then have enough room. I'll try it both ways.

Thanks for the input.
