According to my Workshop Manual, I am supposed to have 222mm or 8.7 inches BETWEEN my rear swing arm plates. As you can see I have 8". Is this supposed to be an outside measurement?

Distance between rear plates

But the Workshop Manual says 8.7" BETWEEN the plates. ?????

Where are you getting that data?
The technical data: Section "A"
For rear suspension units:
222.25 mm for (Spring free length) or 8.75"
I can't find what you are referring to in the workshop manual? I have the workshop manual Models 850 & 750 from 1970 onward. You got me curious.
I measured the space between my swing arm and its 204 mm or 8.025”
The swing arm that I measured was an 750 type early.

It's also in the Frames section.

Point is that I have to really force to get everything in and I leave out a small spacer. That is at 8". The book says 8.7" which would seem right. How does everyone get all the parts in at 8"?

That's the dimension between the frame plates at the rear Iso. mounting, not between the axle plates.

i've spread mine out w/o measuring just by gosh & golly amounts till the parts slip in w/o much fuse any more and sure don't put no 70 lb ft of torque on itneither, maybe 50-60 at most or just good enough not to back off is all, or that lurking stress riser bothers my mental peace on the fly. You should nip up the DS tighter than the long axle though.

Ok I see where you are getting the numbers. Lab is right this is the distance between the triangular plates that the rear iso is attached to.
I have to use a piece of wood to open up the gape to get the spacers in. Kind of like a pry bar and it doesn’t mar the finish. I hope that helps.

That L.A.B. He lurks out there, waiting to pounce on we who do not look closely enough at the manuals. I can see him now, laughing his head off as he pens a one sentence answer to a two page question.

Wood.......used it on the bike when I replaced the iso's. Crude but effective. Too much to ask, I guess, that they just fit.
