Hi All,

I'm having a problem with the left hand handlebar controls

The top button flashes the high beam
the flipper turns the high beam on
The bottom button sounds the horn

The dip light doesn't light. If I take a hot wire and touch the UR wire the dip light lights fine.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,

In that case, the fault is likely to be inside the switch cluster, either a bad or broken switch contact or broken/dry solder joint, or, a break in the UR wire somewhere between the switch cluster and the bulb.

If I take the switch apart and I press one of the flipper contacts the high beam goes on just like when i hit the flipper. When I press the other one the dip light goes on. The flipper only goes in one direction. The flipper points out and flips up only?

You recently had a problem with the flipper on the other switch cluster?

Perhaps somebody dismantled the clusters and replaced each flipper in the wrong switch cluster? :?

Bottom button is correct, for flashing to pass

Horn button correct

The flipper is a 2 position switch Up and down only, no middle position.
low beams should be on in one of the positions, and high in the other. If you can turn on the low beams by pressing one of the contacts then the flipper is not pressing that contact. either a new flipper switch or adjust the contact to get it to make contact with the flipper

Hi Dennis,

The two flippers I have are the same and only flip in one direction.

When turning the key to lights on, why do I need to do anything else to turn the dip light on?

I took the switches apart AGAIN and put each flipper in facing both ways and nothing changed.

At a loss as to what to do next.

Thanks,

Er, do you have the switch on top of the headlight shell turned on?
Normally this switch toggle is straight up with just the little pilot bulb on, then flip to the right to turn on the main beam.

That's correct. The way that the Lucas switch is designed, the high beam lever goes up and the low beam position is straight back and does not physically flip down. The low beam position would look like the OFF position on the turn signal switch.

From the way you described your lighting problem, just like LAB says it is the low beam switch or a poor connection between the low beam switch and the headlight. The reason is because your high beams are working and that tells me that your other wires are OK.

According to cbacejr, the main beam works, it's the dip beam that doesn't.

The headlamp switch feed to the handlebar switch (blue wire) supplies the power for either the main, or the dip beam, depending on the position of the Hi/Lo selector switch, so if the headlamp switch was not supplying power to the cluster then neither beam would work.

The headlamp flash (main beam) function is powered independently by the white wire.

CHECK the switch... disconnect it, use your meter to check. Then rule out the wires by testing at the switch directly. Then repair the switch by cleaning the contacts, or possibly replacing melted plastic parts. Or, you can't do that, replace.

Funny that this just happened to me this afternoon as I fire my old steed up for the first spring ride. No low beam but high worked OK. I separated and opened my headlight rim from the shell and wiggled the headlight socket to be sure the tungsten element wasn't broken (first Check) and sure enough there was a disconnect. I put some dielectric grease in the slots and bobs yer uncle. :p The open road that's all I want.
Cheers,
Tom

This is a good time to remind everyone to REPLACE ALL THE FEMALE bullet connectors.

I have a slightly different issue...main beam will not turn of with flipper. Was working fine earlier today and even just twenty minutes ago. Went to test out my recently installed LED BPF double dipper on the first evening ride. Getting terrific illumination of road signs more that two blocks down the road on main beam. Got back to garage and again toggled main beam, then off to check pattern on a wall...would not shut off...tried headlamp switch off/on...no change. Ignition to no headlight, back to full on, but main beam came back on, not shutting off with flipper or flash to pass actuation.
Will tear the flipper switch apart for testing tomorrow.

Found the problem...45 year old Lucas switchgear not to blame....bench testing and looks like the LED unit internals seem to have locked into both main and dip beam on, no matter which contact gets 12v. Pity, it was giving great illumination on dip and fantastic reach on main. Must have fused and internal circuitry somehow.
Let's see how the vendor deals with it...
