Looking to draw up the bike in solidworks for additional design ideas/modifications. Since the bike is 40 years old, do blueprints exist? Ive seen the simple dimensional drawings from the work manuals, but they look to be for checking the frame positions, I was hoping for alittle more. I have seen a frame or 2 on CAD sites, but I am unsure of how accurate they are. Really wish I had a Faro arm available.

I forget who, but on of the members here has done the frame and some suspension in 3D already...

Hope this will get ya stsrted!

Im guessing that they may be my models you came across on grabcad, the frame was made from the drawing in the manual with a few additional measurements off my frame so not particularly accurate. What might be of more interest though, I did see on here a picture or maybe a PDF scan of a magazine article possibly about the commando frame and the background looked like it may have been the proper drawings for the frame, I thought I had saved it but cant seem to find it

Cheesy, do you have drawings yet for the forward mount and transmission cradle.

I'm building a CNC machine right now, but my CAD skills are lacking.

Planning on cutting out some more Aluminum mounts and cradles.

Yup, thats the models I found. The Dimensions I was checking looked pretty good. I did find some issues between the frame dimensions in the manuals, which is why I was looking for a proper print.

what CAD system did you use to do your work?

I was in the middle of replying to your pm but my 2 year old woke up from her afternoon sleep. I did manage to find the models which I havent touched for a couple of years, they are in SW 2010, the frame was done as a surface so it has no thickness, all the modeling is pretty messy as well, if you send me your email I might be able to zip it all and send it to you in its native format.

Bwolfie, I have done the front engine mount but not the gearbox cradle, the actual modeling of these bits is simpler than drawing them on paper, the problem is measuring it in the first place

Youd just make paper templates of them / patterns even . Lay thin cardboard on. Useing accurate bean cans to cut around with a scalpel ( from the hobby store ) so the tubes are dead accurate .

A domed thing about 10 mm or 1/2 in dia. ( pencil blunt end ) to depress & catch true hole edges sharply . Run around all the edges - one way or another . Then the silly - at the Print Shop can
SCAN IT onto the electrons & suchlike , as they do .

It gives a REAL plan , one DRAWN with squares & triangle & curves & rulers , as theyve done for thousands of years , compatability with the new fangled computer geeks efforts . Tragically . :P

Recall "The World's Straightest Commando" or whatever that was, didn't it have lots of measurements?

But, then, wasn't his point that the factory didn't make 'em straight?

No measurements with ref. to drawing dimensions that I recall. You're right, the whole point about "Worlds Straightest...." was because you could not assume that anything was as it should have been, especially swingarm to steering head axes. :(

This is about where I got to

Dimension blueprints of frames, parts etc?

Before I gave up and started something that would be much more productive

Dimension blueprints of frames, parts etc?

I would like to see the frame made using 4130 Chrom-Moly, Tig welded.

Thin walled tig welded Cr-Moly distortion is negligible. Weight reduction and/or stronger material. Great material properties.

It might be stronger but it will not be stiffer (same tube dimensions) If you use thin wall tube it will be lighter and more flexible

I have specs and dimensions for a Norton mono-shock frame available at my website below.
