Hi everyone,

As I got a lot of tips and inspirations from this site in the past I want to

share my story about installing electronic instruments and the speed sensor on my P11A.

Don’t expect fancy machine work here . My skills and workshop equipment is limited.

After living nearly 30 years with the mechanical Smiths instruments and their well known draw backs I wanted to try the digital ones this time.

The goal is that the conversation should look as stock as possible.

For the speed sensor I like the Comnoz solution. Because it gets rid of the dreaded tach drive internals. Unfortunately it was sold out.

So I had to do it myself.

The sensor is a Motogadget M5 reed switch with 2 magnets.

An old defective tach drive was stripped and and the sensor installed.

The cable runs inside an old tach drive cable which exits in the battery area.

A magnet carrier was made and glued with RTV to the rear wheel.

150 km later it is still in place.

After a 3 months wait the instruments finally arrived from Caerbont.

The speedo is a special with a 190 kmh dial.

The wiring was a challenge but with the help of the Caerbont technical staff the instruments are now working.

It is nice to read the correct speed on my 50 year old motorcycle.

Fantastic job, my compliments.
Who supply this system?.
Great.

Vercu, be careful not to expose the clocks to moisture as I understand they are leaking and really needs to be sealed. / Vorsicht bei Niederschlag, denn die Instrumente sind nicht wasserdicht.

-Knut

Knut, I read that in the forums too.
I hope Smiths have improved their design in the meantime.
At least they advertise them with a new billet case and waterproof to IP67.

No they don't.
It is my design and a friend did the machining.

Note: Smiths Gauges USA sells a similar device.

It is designed for the Commando which may work or may not work for the P11.
The cable solution is different and it was not available some months ago.

You say the instruments are working well, so I have to ask if there is anything left worth saving on this bike?
The last photo indicates that you are moving close to 100 kph toward that wall in front of you with the engine off....

The modifications on my bikes are never permanent. It is easy to bring it back to the original state.

The photo is taken during the startup sequence of the instruments. They swing to the end of the dial and back. The Smiths sign will disappear after that.
And yes the tacho should do that also. The tacho is send back in order to activate this.

Vercu, is there a resettable trip meter as well as an odometer?

The Smiths logo disappears after a few seconds. After that you will see the odometer.

The kill switch is used to switch between odometer and trip meter.

I ,ve done over 5000 miles this year alone and since August the bike has been left outside under a cover. Using it now for everyday riding while the weather is mild and had intermittent heavy showers this week with the bike left out in the open at work.
No leaks whatsoever and I would not advise people to try sealing them if there isn,t a problem, especially under warranty.
Not sure if mine are billet or no, bought from AN in 2015 I think, but a mod that works and looks great.
The speedo can be callibrated to any size tyre by the way, works off the measured diameter.
