Design details - Pinstripe? Grab Rails

I've just acquired my first Norton, a '72 Commando, in beautiful condition. Mine comes without a seat rear grab rail. Additionally, the roadster tank has just the simple Norton logo, but no pin striping as I've seen on others.

Design details - Pinstripe? Grab Rails


Just wondering what the group's take is on these features. Were these optional extras? Or features specific to a model or year?

IMHO I'd leave it as is, sometimes less is more (especially with old Brit bikes)!
 
The grab rail wasn't fitted until the 1973 season (although of course that doesn't prevent you from fitting one if you so wish?).

The only 750 Roadster to have a pinstripe (in the shape of a 'D') was the black scheme.

The double line tank pinstripe and merging 2 into1 side panel scheme was only used on 850 models originally-although it is often seen on repainted 750 models.

Leave the tank as it is Paul, it looks great, very nice. A grab rail would be a worthwhile addition though.

LOL - look who talking!!! Crazy making remark only resolved with at least 2 Cdo, one of which is kept close to factory specs. Grab rails are nice looking back side finish and useful for pillions and to tie cargo to.

Not sure what you're getting at Steve... I took everything I could off of mine, indicators, idiot lights, grab rail, pillion pegs, ignition key, etc, etc. that's what I mean by 'less is more'... Jus' think old Brits look better that way.
 
oh ok Fast Eddie I thought you had a special non-Norton but just removing stuff is acceptable by me if ya even care my opinion. Someday bone stock ones may bring a premium.
 
Do you believe that to be original paint? If it is, it is in very nice condition. There are always people here looking for a paint code for the signal red. You would be doing a service if you kept pulling up next to red cars and comparing paint!

Okay guys,

Seems like the polls are in, I'm not going to touch this baby, just ride it as. Ron from San Francisco PM'd a gallery of his nice 71 Commando with near-identical paint scheme. I'm sold. Still waiting to receive mine from California, due to arrive this week in Austin.

Beautiful bike.
But I see a small item.
On your right side polished aluminum "support plate" I see red wire wrapping out from behind the plate and attached on its outside.
This location is whwre the zener diode is mounted behind the plate and the red wire is not seen.
The zener by now may have been replaced with a podtronics unit but I still see no reason for the red wire on the outside.
 
I wondered why that earth wire was on the outside too RX7171, it's usually behind the plate & under the Zenner body.
