i have serial no 311xxx. would this make this bike a mkiia? also have a 72 750. how can i tell if it's a combat or not? is there any resource that matches serial no to model and date of mfg? as always, thanx. rick

I don't believe there is any way to tell if it is a Mk2A from the serial number. If you still have the original sidecover, it will have the plastic fastener at the bottom of the left sidecover rather than the metal Dzus attached to the frame turning into the spring on a metal tab on top front of the cover. It would also have had a plastic airbox and blackcap mufflers as stock.

For a Combat, the best clue is the "C" stamped above the right exhaust rocker box cover. It also will have the crankcase breather at the rear of the crankcase rather than at the end of the cam (but the '73 MkV also has it there). Also the Combat had 32mm Amals while the non-Combat '72 had 30mm Amals. (Again, the '73 MkV had 32's as well). Combats were supposed to have run from engine no. 200976 to 220000, but I would not consider this too reliable. They also had the disc brake while most non--Combats got a drum.
