Crankcase Breather Install

Well I have to say I was sceptical...

I got my 2010 Commando Cafe Racer about 3.5 years ago with very low miles (172 from memory) hence still running it in but I did notice an oil leak from the cam covers. New gaskets and correct torque later but still leaking. Long story short, it was an oil pipe union directly above the covers that was leaking down, easy fix.

however there was still oil in the “valley” behind the engine. Must be the starter seal I thought. £300 later (one of the bolt holes was stripped, I assume from previous owner) and still an oil leak ! I took to riding with a rag to soak up excess

then with the help of this forum, I read about the crankcase breather mod. I was sceptical because my early bike had the rubber bung which looked as though it would allow some level of breathing. And surely if the starter wasn’t sealing, a breather wouldn’t help. I procrastinated for a year, but would always return to the bike to see a few embarrassing drips of oil on the floor . H I ordered from Colorado Norton (apols if there are other manufacturers but Colorado sound like good friends of the forum and kit is well made/priced). As a side note, I even got a partial refund on the shipping cost post checkout, which was a nice touch.

Fitting took me about 45 mins. Should have been quicker but I downloaded an old version of the instructions and removed the larger plug first. Replaced it and the rest went smoothly.

And as if by magic, no oil leak ! So THANK YOU so much. I love the Norton but found the leaks irritating and embarrassing. I’m a happy chap, especially as the sun has been out today and roads nice and dry

So if, like me you have a leak and spend ages chasing seals and torquing bolts, do yourself a favour and fit a breather kit

Just for clarification,
This was not a crankcase breather installation, but a transmission vent kit from CNW, right?
