Baz it was very common most good wheel builders had stocks of blank spokes cut and threaded them as required using the cyclo workshop rolling machine

Cyclo gear went out of business some years back and the rolling equipment in NLA so they are now becoming worth thier weight in gold
 
I bought spokes from a well known Canadian British bike supplier and they were cut threads. So just a heads up, if you buy spokes or have someone rebuild your wheels for you, I would ask. Admittedly in my original post I said "many" which might not be true, I was trying to point to the good job that Buchanans does without being specific about the other. In truth I don't know how common the cut thread is but buyers should be aware.

I have never seen a cut thread on a UK supplied spoke, 100% rolled. SRM and Central Wheel, PES plus others.

Thanks for your replies. All cracks are on the same side, the brake side. I´ve taken some more photo´s of the Wheel, I´ll need to get them on the the PC, then I´ll post them A.S.A.P

I've always heard it was a bad idea to use a wheel drilled for a different bike. If this is the case then we'll know why.
 
the spoke exit angles look good on Dans rim so it looks correct for application , back in the 90`s Akront hit the rocks financially and i would dare bet QC and material specs were compromised
to get cash in to the business i think you may be one of the unlucky ones

the cut thread spoke sets genrally use metric nipples if produced from the correct materials they are good , how many 1970`s Japanese superbike wheels did you witness collapsing ?
beware of the Taiwanese chrome plated spoke sets they break like twigs , i can recall building some Harley wheels with chrome spokes supplied by the owner after a short period the spokes were
breaking weekly and we had to replace them all with stainless sourced from Central wheel problem solved
 
Spoke are usually made out of high tensile strength steel, so are probably susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement during plating. In Asian facilities there might not be much attention to detail and the spokes might not be baked after plating. I would be very careful about using stainless steel in stressed applications, the fatigue characteristics might not be suitable.
 
Hi Everyone.

Sorry it has bin a while. There´s no cracks in the front rim, only rear. We were in Ireland on our summer Holiday last year, not all roads there are the best, but I can´t remember that I´ve hit any big potholes. Quality of the alloy, spokes too tight or incorrect drilled holes could all be a possible reason, but it still dosen´t answer why it has happend now.

Here´s a Photo of the rim, the cracks are marked with red. As you can see all cracks are on the same side, the brake side. Looking at the holes, they´re not drilled in the same angle left and right side, so I´d say they´re drilled specially for the Commando rearwheel. However, they´re not 100% straight, but not far off.

I´ve checked the rim and it´s straight within 0,8mm both sideways and up/Down.

I´ve checked Hagon and they only list flanged Excel. Central Wheels is the same. Buying from the US is going to be expencive, so I´m still looking for somewhere in Europe to buy non flanged rims, anyone?

Excel makes all the size rims we are usually interested in for a Commando in both 36 and 40 hole versions, so you would expect anyone who has the 36 could also get the 40. That's for the dimpled rims, of course. They also make non-dimpled rims that can be drilled to any hole pattern desired, but those aren't the ones we usually use for Commandos.
