kind of a noob questions. needing a new battery - I know nothing about brands, what's good, what's bad, so what's the best bang for the buck? same for the oil filter - baldwin's any good? others? recommendations. TIA....

I have been using Bikemaster Gel batteries in several different machines. If you don't want a $pendy Li-Fe like a Shorai, gel batteries are much better than acid-flooded. No spillage, they work in any position and last as long as a premium lead-acid. Cost is about a push. $80-90 last time I bought one, which has been several years, since they last.

I've always used a Yuasa 12N9 standard lead acid battery or equivalent. Even auto parts stores carry them. But my buddy has been using an AGM type for a few years and he says you can get more capacity in the same size without the hassle of acid/water level. For oil filters you can get them on eBay pretty cheap, though I get mine from the local NAPA store - p/n 1032 (they have to order it).

I've had the (same) Shorai in my Alton E-start Commando since '12 when I installed the E-start. It's been a great battery but definitely more expensive than other options. OTOH, I can't recall ever having a moto battery last more than a couple of years so the price over the long term may actually be less than other types of batteries.

I had an Odyssey gel battery last me for 14 years. Replaced it with s Shorai when I installed the cNw electric start kit.

Avoid the K&N oil filters with the tack welded on hex nut. Many, many reports of these failing at those weld points and spewing oil all over rear wheel the hex nut is supposed to only be used for removing the filter but I'm sure many buyers use it for tightening. However I have read many accounts of failures stating nut was never used during install. There was a recent recall on these but apparently new batches are still failing.

2 cases of the K&N oil filters used so far between Ducati and Commando (same filter fits both) with no issues ,just lucky I guess ... AGM brand name batteries for all bikes , very long life when kept on tenders ....prolly make a change next filter purchase have used Hi-flo in past and it same part # as K&N ,please post up any known faults with that brand before I end up with a bunch to use ....
