Any tips/tricks for getting it off? I installed this one within the last year or so, don't remember it being quite this difficult to get the old one off.

Also, the countershaft sprocket nut is beveled on one side, flat on the other. I remember learning (post this installation) that there is a definite right and wrong as to which side faces the sprocket, but I don't remember which way that was!

Any advice will be appreciated, as always.

Soon to come, "how do I get the blessed gearbox outa the frame" questions.... stay tuned!

Thanks all - BrianK

Wrap an old drive chain around the sprocket and fasten ends around a bench vice so the sprocket can't turn. The securing nut is LEFT HAND THREAD. The flats of the nut face the sprocket, there is also a lock tab washer plate that fits over and is held on with a grub screw.

Thanks Mick. Actually, I've got the nut off, just can't get the sprocket off the mainshaft.

I suppose I can wait til the gearbox is out of the frame and on my workbench, as I'll have a better shot at it then, but I was thinking removing it now might make getting the box out of the frame easier.

Hi Brian,

Its just seized on the splines then. Soak it in CRC and very gently tap around the edges with a suitable socket bar. Its better to get it off now. The alternative is to do it when the box is removed and inside cogs removed. You can punch the main shaft out through the box. That will dislodge the sprocket.

CRC - that the US brand same as WD40, Penetrene. Lubricates, anti water, anti rust, not bad with Tequila.

Thanks Mick. I've sprayed it with Kroil and knocked off for the night. Try again tomorrow.

Not looking forward to wrestling with that gearbox but it must be done. Looking forward to the actual gearbox rebuild, though. Did one recently and learned a lot (now let's see how much I've forgotten!!).

Thanks for your help - BrianK

Couldn't resist having another go...sprocket's off! Thanks again Mick.

not quit right. the beveled side faces to the sprocket as the sprocket is not flat where the nut sits.
