Could I get a realistic view on belt drive?

Not exactly an answer to your question but the first commando I bought didn't have the tab washers under the bolts that secure the inner chain case to the crank case
One of the bolts came out and dropped into the primary chain this caused an incredible amount of damage
Especially to the wallet of an 18 year old apprentice like me!
The chain had jumped the engine sprocket and clutch cutting through the stator ripping off the the stator mounts and I think it bent the gearbox mainshaft
I wonder if a belt would have done as much damage?
Not really a fair comparison I know because this was the previous owners fault for leaving the tab washers off

I had a chain fail on the dyno several years ago. I wish I would have taken some pics as there was a lot of damage. I was glad I was standing on the other side of the bike.

Belts only for me. My present synchroflex belt is at ~37,000 miles and still looks like new.
The last one failed at ~76,000 miles. It didn't break. It just got a loose piece of rubber that I heard hitting the case while the bike was warming up in my garage .
