Correct zenor diode fitment

Is it correct to fit the zenor diode to the inside of the footrest hanger and the earth loop to the outside of the hanger?
I've seen an awful lot with the earth loop between the zenor and the plate?

Yes the zener goes to the inside and the correct nut is 26tpi and not 28UNF. Be sure to put some heat sink compound or the zener won't cool and eventually die (cook).
Also clean the Z plate aluminum first and the zener will more likely last 100 years longer than you do. :)

Back in the day I often saw them with the earth loop between the zenor and footrest plate and wondered how the zenor survived without proper heat transfer!?
Also used to see them fitted to the zenor stud to the outside of the footrest plate

There certainly is a very high percentage that, IMO. have no clue. Here in USA, considering how big the country is, there are almost NO competent shops and unfortunately they all flock to forums now-a-days. Local clubs help fill the gap and merchants sell fixes good or bad.
In 1971 I could not keep my first Norton going. My second effort starting in 1988, with help from the local club and INOA got me on the right track. Zener's I have down pat...
