Corbin quality (2009)

Steve,

Corbin will shave the sides of the seats to order. I had them remove 1/2 inch from each side when I ordered my seat this past spring. The fit is quite good and I got the seat in 3 weeks.

I'll say this for Norman Hyde, they are definitely in the upper tier, price-wise (for EVERYTHING they sell). They have a loyal following, so no need to discount...

I have had Corbin seats on every one of the following bikes.
1990 VFR
1998 CBR 900RR
2000 Moto Guzzi V-11 Sport
2005 R1
2005 Duc 999S

I guess it is trite to say that I like them! :?

I like the idea that I may have an unexpected passenger from time to time
Why ? They only use more fuel and whinge that your going too fast

Mine never whinges about going too fast always complains about too slow and is a good alternative to a GPS system :D

I run a Corbin on my X1 Buell and I've done 1200 kilometre days. A sore butt, but no problems once I was off the bike for a half hour or so. Personally the shape of the seat is more important than the softness. Soft ones tend to put you on the seat base after a while anyway. I need a change from my standard Roadster seat but I don't know which way to jump yet. More homework needed.

Russell is a legend in the long distance riding community. Sargent has a great rep for customer service.

Maybe its just me but a bike with an armchair fitted to it just looks so wrong .... :D actually to be serious I worked in the states for a year and soon realized why some home comforts are a neccesity long long drives to get anywhere from Boca Raton in Florida..

"That Russell stuff looks ugly. Might be nice if I had that wide of an ass."

I believe the Russell seat is a case of function over form. Quite the opposite of the Corbin seat.

If I needed a custom seat for something I'd go here.

The point about Russell is long distance, long seat time. Thousand mile days strung together. Their stock in trade is this type, but they make custom seats for sport bikes also. Sargent runs the whole gamut too, with gel inserts and multiple foam densities. It depends on how much time you spend looking at your bike or riding it. I don't think a GoldWing seat would even fit on a Commando, do you?

I've been thinking about trying to get them to put the lock system in the stock seat so easy switch between 1 and 2up... We'll see if they reply to my email

The type of Goldwings I have are way off from a Commando. Even the earlier wings are just bigger bikes. You sure do see why people want cushy seats after a while in the saddle though.

Has anyone had a gel insert fitted into a seat. This would possibly be a way of getting form and function into a seat, and save my bony arse  I don't need an armchair, and when I do I'll get an armchair bike, like a Hardly Rideable..
I reckon I will try to find a Corbin Gunfighter to use as well as my roadster. The good thing about the MK2 is the seats change so easily. You can have both. I never really pick anyone up on the way..

I don't remember where I saw it now, but somevody had a gel pad built into a Commando seat.
They cut the pad area out of the stock foam, fitted it carefully, and recovered it. It looked quite stock but probably rode better.

My Corbin story is 8 years of over a dozen forums (8 of which I moderate or co-moderate).

Literally HUNDREDS of accounts of horrible customer service
Seats that feel like upholstered bricks to all but about 10% of the owners (arguable percentage, but close)
Exhorbitant price for the product delivered
Ridiculously long wait time measured in MONTHS beyond original "promised" date
Total lack of customer care unless you show up in person at thier shop, EARLY in the morning

...and those are the typical complaints. There are far worse complaints, some taken to BBB and other remedial avenues.

Full disclosure - I've only PAID for ONE Corbin seat (well below 1/2 price, used), and sold it with a rolling project bike.

Personal opinion: They are arguably the nicest LOOKING seat you can put on a Commando.

That's about the height, length and breadth of it.

They were uncomfortable then too.

If you have a Corbin butt, buy a Corbin seat. Admittedly a substantial gambel if you don't know what kind of butt you have...

I have tried Sargent and Corbin, both are head and shoulders above stock saddles, but, for me, the Corbin is my favorite. I haven't felt the need to try Russell or Mayer, but if I had a bike set up for long distance riding I'd, probaby, roll the dice with one of them.

The problem I have with the new motorcycles I had in the late 80s to late 90s is that they, mostly, have center stands as options, their seats suck and their exhaust systems/intake plumbing are fugly and way too restrictive. By the time you get the machine broken-in and fitted with the right seat, pipes, intake you get to pour more money into upgrading the suspension, and, usually, the brakes. Then, to add insult to injury, you wake up one morning and realize that all the money you spent doesn't add a penny to resale value, and may, more likely, decrease said value.

The expression, "putting lipstick on a pig" came from somewhere...

Best.
