converting to a single AMAL carby????

greetings: the 71 basketcase is getting closer to completion , after a couple of years 'rest' (translation, marrying off two kids and wasting any extra $$ I had for motorcycle rebuilding)

I'm wondering about converting to a single carb using one of my existing (just rebuilt) original AMAL's.......have any of you done it and if so, what jets should I use? Any other considerations?

this bike will be a cruiser, not a performance bike. I'm going to noodle around town and take it to northern vermont for cruising.

My mate has ran his Mk2a on one single 32 for years and he swears by the conversion. I think his set up is No 3 slide 106 needle jet and a 280 main jet using a spray tube wiithout a cutaway. Perhaps a 260 might be better with a cutaway spray tube. Anyhow, you'll always have a spare carb ready when the other wears out.

That's what I was hoping to hear. In fact, I've looked around the web a bit more( though this is myfirst stop when looking for info on my norton) and found that same info by more than a few folks.


for pecuniary reasons mostly, I'd rather pay 60-80- USD for a 2 to 1 manifold and a couple of jets than the 300+ for the mikuni conversion.... My main goal is to get riding this thing this season!!!!! If I feel the need, I'll convert to mikuni later on.

The biggest snag is that my nephew is a motorcycle mechanic and he has the wheels ( I laced them ) for new tires and truing. He's now in love so the young lady is taking all of his consciousness and my wheels are collecting dust :cry:

If I can find a truing stand, I can true them as I used to build bicycle wheels and am pretty good at wheel truing... anything to get this project moving!

hey folks, I have had a couple PM's asking me what I've found out about converting to a single AMAL (one of the existing carbs from my stock bike) so clearly there is some interest in finding about this.

I'd really like to hear from anyone else who has done this and knows of a resource to buy a 2 into 1 manifold that will work for this...... My feeling is that if I can make it work , it's a way to get the basketcase up and running for less $$ and if I need to, I can always move up to the mikuni later on as money allows.

I heard from RGM: part cost including shipping and all the wierd UK taxes works out to 40 pounds........(roughly 80 american dollars according to the currency calculator on their site.)

Well, you don't pay the *weird* 17.5% VAT (14.8% deducted) tax, so it does work out a bit cheaper for you.

By the way, just because things are done differently elsewhere to how things are normally done where you live doesn't necessarily make them weird, - just different.

LAB, So true. I was sitting having a beer with a nice gentleman in Canada and we got talking about how taxes work in each of our countries. His conclusion was something to the effect of " In Canada we have high taxes if you pay them" Here in the state's every state collects the money in different ways. Some have personal property taxes on things you already own, this concept seemed very unfair to me till I realized that they didn't pay taxes that I did in my state.
RGM are very nice people who have saved me a lot of money.
