Compound fracture of the Crankcase. Pt2.

Howdy guys.. This is as far as I'v got, as I am waiting for a couple of Pullers and a Clutch tool to arrive from a friend. The photos are not that clear but I guess you can see the problems ahead of me. Can any one tell me if these are the original Norton pistons and are they the ones that can give trouble. If so I will change them....

Re the pistons, check to see if there is a slot connecting the expansion grooves around the radius of the piston, if there is they are the problem pistons.
Hope those bits of follower didnt damage the con rods too much.

Those are same coma slotted pistons that one let go 3 wks after getting a Combat and only about 50 mph looking for place to stop for a shot, tinkle>Locked up.
Lucked out on piston injured and barrel cracked trashed, but no case damage.
Get ride of them, they have been stressed and strained so who knows when they will let go and take stuff with them. LIkely need new cylinder so a new bore too.
Have rod magnafluxed and for sure all new fasteners with attention of rod bolt seat rim. Check crank and cam for run out jerks and pinion shaft too.
Could even jerk snot out of rest of drive train too, in case that skipped ya mind, thinking can get away easy on an frail Commando.

I've never known an aluminum part to be magnafluxed. I assume the con rods are Commando rods. Maybe Zyglo?

Crack Detection - Zyglo
The magnaflux machines little brother is this Zyglo machine. While the magnaflux is used to detect cracks in steel parts, the Zyglo is used to detect cracks in aluminum parts. We mostly use this for pistons, although we use it occasionally for drag racers that use aluminum rods. Just like the magnaflux machine, we use the Zyglo for racers who want us to check aluminum parts for cracks.

Also some shops offer shot peening of Al rods, can't hurt after they've been polished up crack free.

Norton rods are over built and seems something else always goes first to take out a Norton rod.
