I’m not much into “scramblers” but I’m curious how you all would compare the triumph to the norton?
is it even a comparison?
1200 cc vs 650 cc
Full frame vs trellis frame
Rider modes vs analog
Triumph 89 Hp / 110 Nm
Norton 86 Hp / 64 Nm

The triumph would have more low end power and have to work less to gain more.

The Triumph at this point has more going for it , steel gas tank , a track record etc.. I would wait before buying the Norton , if it were me.

I think the term "Scrambler" is a bit subjective.
We don't actually know how much the Norton will ultimately weight in at.
But from the Triumph website their scramble weighs 447.5lbs - dry.
Add apporx. 24lbs for 4 qts of oil, and 12 lbs or so for anti-freeze/coolant and you got nearly 484lbs.
That's hefty for a scrambler.
Also, not sure if dry weight includes the battery, if not, well, hello 494#

What am I thinking ? You couldn't buy the Norton anyway !
Indeed Tony, I was gonna say that in comparing the two, the main difference seems to be that the Triumph is available and the Norton isn’t!

More seriously though, I don’t think they can be compared at all without properly stating the desired use. And even then, we gotta wait for the Norton to become real and see what it’s really like.

Garner Norton‘s track record on weight and power claims was not good. I’d expect the Atlas to be both heavier and less powerful than those early claims.

take this with a micro grain of salt. I know it’s a old video and also just talk.
personally I like the atlas looks better but the triump bike is overall better.

I would take the Norton every time. Call me shallow, but I enjoy a bit of exclusivity, something a bit different where there are unlikely to be a slack half dozen sat at your local biker haunt. The Atlas performance figures look pretty good, if they eventuate! Looks bloody good too.

Does anybody really ‘scramble’ on these bikes? Methinks the percentage who do would be very low; don’t know how long that steel Triumph tank would last! A bit like large capacity Adventure Bikes, the majority of which spent the vast majority of theIr time on the tarmac. I know cos’I got one in my garage! :) Not a criticism - people ride what they want, how they want, when they want to. Part of the freedom motorcycles give you and long may it be so!

Its true, most “off road bikes” never go off road. Personally, I don’t think it’s a criticism either.

Modern off road bikes have all the road performance anyone really needs / can use, with much softer suspension that has much greater travel, very comfortable ergonomics, great luggage capacity etc. Ultimately, given the bumpy, pot holes strewn state of roads, modern off road bikes make great road bikes.

I do love listening to sports bike riders on their race replicas, bedecked in full race leathers, sneer at the pseudo off roaders... the irony that THEY never venture on to a race track clearly being lost on them !

Couldn't agree more Eddie. Most "adventure" bikes or "scramblers" are fine for unsealed roads but take a skilled, fit and strong rider to truly take off road.
For me 4 wheel drive tracks etc need a bike which you can afford to drop ($) and can easily be picked up by yourself when the bike is loaded with luggage. If you go truly off road the bike will go down from time to time. To my mind no large adventure bike or scrambler fits those two tests, at least not to this 59 year old weakling whose wallet isn't bottomless.
Back to Norton vs Triumph - Norton for me, as a "scrambler style" road bike no question.

I would think the Norton engine to be more high tech. Punching out comparable power at half the size. If I wanted a Scrambler and the Norton were tried and true, I'd probably get it. That said, its not.
