Hi
does anyone have a set of these pipes?
I want a set for my flat tracker project.
Armours dont do them & do not have a pattern to work from.
Unity have them in Chrome for the price of a complete standard system & silencers!!! well nearly.
Any suggestions?
thanks all the best Chris

Chris, Have you tried RGM or Norvil? They sometimes have less popular models available, that are not specified in their catalogues. Coincidentally I also have a flat-track Commando project on the go. I am still undecided as to which pipe configuration I will use. I have a set of SS pipes and a set of non standard low pipes that both exit on the right side I bought these at an autojumble during a trip to the UK. I may end up modifying some pipes to fit, since I will probably paint them black anyway, so rechroming is not a problem. I am currently planning to use a High Rider tank and a replica seat from a Harley XR 750. There is however a very nice flat track Commando tank and seat unit on 'The Tank Shop' web site. I am quite tempted by this I must say. Do you have any photos of the project so far?

Flat Tracker

Hi Dave
have a look at "flat tracker" about page "3".
Looking for a seat the exhaust & small cheap modern rear master cylinder!
I am going to start on rebuilding the gear box & putting on the primary drive.
I will post a couple of photos & perhaps you can post a few. I didnt have an aim for this bike I am just trying to use up stuff I have in the garage & the look has evolved from there. It will change. The seat is the biggest problem. Love the Corbin seats but will go cheap & stick something on it for now. Its supposed to be my short trip hack. Thanks to someones suggestion (cough) 47 rear sprocket. It maybe a unicycle! Makes me wonder why I went to all the trouble of fitting 4 piston calipers.
all the best Chris

Chris I did have a look. It seems that you are much further ahead than me and I'm not sure that I have any useful photos that I can offer at the moment. The gearbox and swing arm/ isolastics are done, engine in pieces and the frame is under the stairs waiting for one of 3 other Commandos to depart from my workshop so that it can 'assume the position'. I will perhaps temporarily hang the tank, seat and exhaust on my S-type project to see what it all looks like together. I will probably use some kind of central oil tank so that I can achieve a slimmer junction of the tank and seat. One of our other forum members 'Captain' was kind enough to send me an article and some photos of a beautiful flat-track Commando some time back. I can forward these to you if you contact me offline at <chiuchowgum@hotmail.com>

Thanks Dave

Hi Dave
I will e mail you for the flat tracker info you have, thankyou.
I have looked at the RGM oil tank & I dont think it looks right. I am going to use the standard tank for now as it just fits. My friend suggested the s tank as it sits across the frame with the battery box, because of the high pipes. I run these on my Seeley. For the flat tracker I would like to run two pipes underneath the frame with short meggas. On the oil tank side I am looking again at the Belgium cafe racer that was featured earlier in the year with the oil in frame. I will combine it with a small tank below the battery box platform. On my Daytona race bike I have had no end of problems with the Antig oil in frame as it does not have enough capacity ie one third space to brath into. It reversed the timing cover oil seal last time out & did a fair bit of damage to the engine. Hopefully using an extra tank will allow me to up the capacity while still giving some breathing space. This is forward thinking as at the moment all I want is to get it on the road,.
Speak to you soon.
all the best Chris

Did either of you guys happen to see the minimulist orange flat tracker by a Scottish guy in a "Classic Bike" a couple of yrs back?
They did one of those "shoot - out" type articles with maybe 5 or 6 different Commandos.
Very tastefully stripped bike. He also used the Hi Rider tank with high S style black pipes finished with tuneable Supertrapp off-road megas.
Best road going flat tracker type Norton I've seen.

Chris, I was also thinking of using an S-type tank, or else an alloy central one like most Tritons use. The RGM one looks nice, but will not give me the look I am seeking.
Shedweller, I did see that article you mentioned, it was indeed very nicely done and I have it in amongst my reference photos somewhere.

Yes

I remember that bike well.
I am not sure if its been featured but there was a photo of the rocket 3 flat tracker from the Ardingly show in sussex.
This bike is also in a stunning shade of orange.
detail was superb. I have decided that I am not going the high pipe route,so I will keep looking. Once I have sold something I might have to bite the bullit & go back to unity!

Something like this perhaps?

Viking Exhausts ($?)

Commando TT pipes

Commando TT pipes

I'm looking for something like these (I can't remember where these pictures came from.)

Commando TT pipes

Commando TT pipes

Tucked right down the middle. These would keep them away from the pavement. I suspect I may need to make them myself through pieces bought at J.C. Whitney, etc.

Viking can do the tucked in style. I was going to get him to make me a set for my Commando, but with all Brembo front and rear brakes ect. it would have looked a bit too modern for me so I just went with stainless pea shooters. The price quoted to me was kind of steep at around $400 ish for just the header pipes.

Exactly what is required!

Spot on!
The ones in the old photograph are exactly what I remember (& exactly what I want) I know all about Viking exhaust's & I would love to buy some as the quality is superb. Coco is right though, they are a bit to rich for me at the moment.
Thanks for looking much appreciated.

Dr Blair

Ha just finished posting & the old noggin clicked!
Just remembered the 2 into 1 into 2 Dunstall exhaust! Designed by Gordon Blair.
My friend Rob has a Commando hidden in his shed with this exhaust on it! He also picked up another one at a jumble soon after!
Problem solved?
I will have to pay him a visit.

Re: Dr Blair and pipes

Chris, thought you might like 'em.
They are great because they have curves.
They aren't the standard ‘tight bend at the top and more graceful curve part way down’.
The Viking pipes are close, but the older pipes are a bit better.
They flow.
And a question to others – would anyone have dyno charts that compare:
1 a stock non balanced set of pipes and peashooters to
2 same non balanced pipes with Dunstall megaphones to
3 Dunstall 2-1-2 with the smaller Dunstall megaphones?
Everything else kept stock (like carbs, displacement and cams, etc. to keep the playing field even).
Also, the dyno charts would not be embelished by a mag or by aftermarket suppliers.
