Hello all.....
My first posting but I have enjoyed reading thru the posts for a while.
I have a 72 Combat that has been off the road for about 30 years while I did the career, house ,kids thing . My brother and I have just started running his old road race bike at the LSR races in Maxton, N.C. I have been thinking about rebuilding the Commando into a race bike for the same purpose. There are not a bunch of guys running in the modified 750 class for production pushrod motors and at least one record is under 120mph.
Whats the general thought about what kind of speed could be rung out of a 750 with some compression, head work and a good cam?
I have checked on some the the goodies available from Maney and some of the others out there but was thinking more about working with the stock bottom end with a bit of prep work......at least to start out with.
Also, if anyone has gone with a different rear hub that would make gearing changes easier I'd love to hear about it.
I am just in the "contemplatin" stage at this point so no pics to post.......Plus I'm sorta a computer dummy and would have to work at getting them posted.
Thanks in advance,
Bill

Go to your local motorcycle scrap yard and check out rear wheels from dirt bikes, preferably from a drum braked one which IMOHO would have less drag than a disk. I'm sure if you pick the right one, sprockets are available in many sizes.

Good luck with your project.

Very mild tuning, very careful assembly, proper gearing, careful weight reduction, proper tires & pressures, and a lightweight rider should yield 120 without any dramas. There are a hundred speed sectrets that don't need to be fussed with reach your goal; these invariably involve money, time and some reduction in reliability.

The closer it is to stock and the more meticulous the assembly, the more reliable the ride.
