I am building a 1974 Commando in the style of the Police Interpol bikes. I have the tank, seat and panniers. i am looking for a fairing in the style of the Avon fairings that Norton used back in the day. What is currently available, and where do I find one. I am in the USA so shipping from the UK might be a bit dear.

I say - one ought to be de-mobbing the poor old interplod, cruel mis-use of a Commando - a bit like using a thoroughbred in harness..
Anyhow, I heard the cops hated them, & abused them to breaking point - so they could get BMWs sooner..

I still have the Avon fairing off my 1976 MK3, it's probably the latest and last design for Norton plod bikes. Here's a pic for comparison from around 1979. It's a big lump of plastic and like you say the cost of importing will be stupid money! But it's useful for getting the right fairing for your bike (don't forget the mounting brackets, front mudguard, single seat and rear crash bars to be authentic :D )

That's what you'd believe but I sometimes talk to an ex Commando riding cop at a local mid week meet over here. Despite the broken gearboxes, oil tanks and loose exhausts he loved his so much that he bought the last one he used on his retirement.

When I was a kid [in N.Z.] the bike cops rode Triumph Saints, you could even pick `em de-mobbed, still with the single seat & extra electric fittings,: TR6P engine I.D. prefix, & E 3134 cams [actually, some may have been prematurely 'liberated' from.. ah - servitude, by.. er,hoodlums - & they were pretty quick for the day, -then the coppers ran a bunch of late production BSA T/bolts, [Govt must`ve got a job lot cheap] . Never saw Nortons though..
By the time I was personally concerned about cop bike performance [mid `70s] - the poor bloody rozzers had overloaded, unwieldy parade junk such as Suzuki GT 550 [! ]triples & the inevitable Honda 750/4s, not much cop [`scuse the pun] as pursuit machines, real dangerous to the riders in fact, with all that added top hamper on already vague roadholding machines from standard...

That's also what I find from the Merseyside cops who rode Interpols, most of them really liked them. I'm sure that me riding a Commando 30 years ago got me off with many licence points ! Before that they had TR6Ps which were not that popular, however you have to judge the machinery against the standards of the day. I've had three ex Interpols, a 750 and and two 850, all were good bikes.
