In a desperate effort to improve the breed and join (in no particular order and apologies for any ommisions) Mike Taglieri, Dave Taylor, Brian Tyree, Mick Hemmings, Les Emery, Ludwig, Heinz Kegler, Jim Comstock, John Bould (R.I.P.), Maddas140, & Matt @ Cnw in what I term as "Norton Commando folklore" I have designed and manufacterd (by hand) this little device which I have christened the "Cliff-Hanger".

But what's it for? I hear you ask.

Only one clue - These are not required after engine number 325001 apparently. The first person to guess right gets one free (anywhere in the world).

After that I'll post the dimensions etc. ( if anyone is interested)

Cheers,

Cliff.

Commando folklore (2017)

If you google "Norton engine number 325001" it sez
"blah blah blah".

I'm not going to be a spoiler/killjoy, so folks will have to google it themselves.

(& Google will probably make $zillions from their advertising revenue,
is there no fairness in this world anymore)

I'd be curious to see how it works though, I haven't made that leap/connection yet....

I think the idea is to cut the right lower frame rail, slip this in the gap, and weld the frame back together so you can hang your speedo cable from the small hole?
Maybe not.
How about the big hole slips over the right handlebar so you can hang the caliper while servicing the front wheel? Doesn't work on the Mk 3 'cause it's right-handed?
Okay, I give up.
If I had one, I'd be tempted to hang a 50 pound weight from the big hole, hook it to my belt, help me kickstart the beast.

Neat way to hold rear brake light wiring away from the exhaust or the latest version of a lightweight head steady.
Surely it can't be an electric starter

Some interesting suggestions. One was sooo close
If it helps those dots (on the glass top of our cooker) are about 3mm (0.118") apart.

It has to be isolastics related.

After 325001, the Mk 3 had vernier isolastics.
So no need for this thing.

But, nothing comes to mind....
Maybe having a trained octopus mean you don't need one ?

my next guess was the same as nortonspeed's guess
I think it may bolt to an axle, going by the hole diameter

You have implied it is for earlier than the mk 3, as that number is supposed to be the first one of the mk 3's.
16-17 mm bore?????? 16 mm is close to 5/8 inch
No clue yet.
Dereck

Possibly a hook for fitting the rear drum brake lever spring (Mk3s not having the drum brake)?

I 'm with Baldy. Helmet hook. Mounts to top shock mount.
