I am getting to the wiring stage on my Rickman build. I will soon need to know what I need to 'wire in'. battery, rectifier etc. my first question is the coils, I am sure I have seen some smaller coils in black plastic coating and a lot smaller in size, are these as good as normal coils. are they suitable, engine is 750 T140 1979, I will be running digital speedo/rev counter. 55w headlight, l.e.d rear light, not sure about ignition swt, I have thought about keyless, don't know what is available. Horn. be glad of any help and advice. thanks Neil

It can depend on which smaller black plastic coated coils you mean and also the (electronic?) ignition system.

If it's the type shown below, then they probably aren't, as they generally have a low Ohms rating and therefore only suitable for use with certain types of digital electronic ignition.

i have cleaned the original coils up and they are stamped , Lucas 17m6 45220a 48 78 does this mean that they are 6 volt. I am hoping to try and re-use them. can they be checked to see if they are ok. cheers for any help

Yes (manufactured week 48, 1978)

The primary resistance should be about 2.0 Ohms. There should be no continuity (so 'infinity') between any terminal and the casing.
