I just installed the Tri Spark I bought from CNW; I had a Boyer. I hesitated at first because of the price, but I called Matt and he said I'd been a good boy so Santa would put it under my tree. I'm so happy I did it. This is the first time since I've owned the bike in 10 years that I've been able to have it idle below 1500 without hunting & seeking or dieing. Now it's idling at 1,000 and I think I could set it lower after I tune it in. The big plus is no kickback; I was getting gunshy about starting my bike; in fact I think it ruined my skiing days. I'll take it out for a test ride today and report back, but so far I'm pleased. I also bought and installed the steering head bearings from CNW so I'm anxious to see how they handle. I had a wicked shimmy if I took my hands off the bars above 50mph and I hope this will resolve this. I also put in progressive springs.
I must say that the folks at CNW are really a class act. The box was here the Wed. before CMas- I ordered it the Monday before. I called Gary and Matt with various stupid questions and they were always very patient and helpful. Last night I called Matt about 5PM to ask about timing with the Tri Spark and he was happy to help.
I have admired the CNW restorations on their website, but I didn't appreciate their craftsmanship until I got the milled seal retainers in my hands; they are beautiful. And bear in mind that these are not even seen after you put the rubber seal caps on so imagine what the workmanship is on exposed bits. That's why those bikes on CNW's website look like works of art!
Next step for me will be the vernier isolastics from CNW and their head steady, but I want to ride it a bit before I do that just so I have some comparison.
I forgot to mention I also replaced the twin coils with one of the CNW single coils
Matt said 28 BTDC at 3800 or 26 @3000. Seems to be good but I haven't had a chance to test ride it, but it did start first kick this morning and it was about 34 degrees outside- warmer in the garage of course. I was ready to go and noticed my fuel bowls were overflowing onto the garage floor so I'm fixing that now. Hope to get out today It's 52 degrees outside right now at 2PM.

PS: If anyone wants a Boyer, I've got two for sale- the one that was in the bike when I bought it and another MkIII that I bought and didn't use because it had an extra wire that I couldn't figure out. It was the kill switch wire. But I used the stator plate because the one that was in the bike had been epoxied up at the connection points on the stator plate. Obviously the previous owner had had problems with the connections breaking. When I took the Boyer off one of the connections was completely broken at the terminal where it attaches to the stator plate. How it even ran is a mystery to me, but I had problmes with it since I installed it so I don't think that was the idle problem.
Re: price on the two boyers, make me an offer. If it's worth crossing the international bridge to mail them I will. Otherwise they are going into the trash barrel.

What are CNW's recommendations on timing with the Tri-Spark?

My idle was already very stable (800-850 rpm) on my Combat with a Boyer, balanced pipes and Dunstalls--so far there's been no discernible operational difference with the Tri-Spark.

Did you get my edit above? 28 BTDC @ 3,800 or 26 @ 3000
I just took it out for a short ride and I can't see any diff in power, but it idles pretty as you please @1,000.
No hunting, seeking or dieing- I'm thrilled.
I also added to my original post that I also replaced the twin coils with a dual output single coil from CNW.
The coils I had on my bike though were new; I bought them from Baxter thinking to replace everything related.
They made no difference.
I will take a longer ride manana and let you know, but I think I'm gonna be real happy I spent the bucks.
Tinkering with the old iron is fun, but for me riding is much more fun so if I have my druthers I'll be riding.
Just knowing I can go out and give it a kick and not worry about dislocating my knee and have the bike start on the first kick makes my day.
Why did you switch to the Tri Spark if your Boyer was working OK?

The only real difference I've noticed between Boyer and Tri spark is the lack of kickback.

Thanks for the timing specs.

I replaced the Boyer because the ten-year-old analog black box died--the other components checked out fine. Many thanks again to Eric Goforth and GrandPaul for helping with the diagnosis and a replacement box. I'm hanging on to the complete Boyer system in the event of a problem with the Tri-Spark. I did find the bike was difficult to start with the Tri-Spark timing set at 31 degrees until I dialed it back to 28 or so.

Best of luck with your new setup
