Mighty Norton Knowledgeable,

This moring I started up the bike to go for a little ride. When engaging first she died. After restarting and observing I noticed my clutch is only half engaging.

Symptoms;

Can't find nuetral anymore (never had a problem before).
When i put the bike in first, with the clutch lever in, it's acting as though the lever is half out.
Moving through the gears is rough.

I have looked at the cable and it's seems to be fine. It is connected in the gearbox and looks to be operational.

Can y'all point me in the right direction. Everything was working fine yesterday. Thanks in advance.

Joe, Sounds like a retaining nut has come loose. Clutch rod adjustment lock nut or the other end in the gear box cover use blue Loctite when you find it. It is also possible to have the cir-clip behind the clutch basket go away.

Thanks Greg,

But both the Nut and Lock Nut are in place and tight. I did look and it appears looks like the plates are seperating properly.

How much play at the clutch lever and what to feel and hear when you turn it over with the clutch pulled in(not running of course)?
Is it free, dragging?

After running it, does it feel hot on the back side by the front sprocket? Is the clutch actuating arm behind the gearbox inspection cover seem proper?

Could the little hollow roller on the pivot arm has gone bad. This is the one that is on the clutch actuating arm.

A1: No play. Nive and snug on the clutch lever. Although i have tried loosening it and giving it some slack. No difference.

A2: With the clutch in the kick start lever pushes through fine. No weired sounds, and seems to be normal. No dragging or clutch noise.

A3: No hotter than usual.

A4: Looks ok. Seems to be in the proper position.

No Play? Can you adjust it for play. If not at the handlebar then at the clutch adjuster screw?

Norbsa may be correct with the circlip issue behind the basket.

Have you done any clutch work lately?

If I recall, those are symtoms I had when my circlip popped. I heard it, but ran it a little too far. When I pull it apart the first Clutch Shim was melted to the clutch locating washer. It cleaned up ok. If this is your problem, when going back together, torque your clutch center nut to 40lb and use locktight. 70 is just too darn much.

I obviously have a issue that needs to be resolved. It's the only part of the bike that i haven't updated etc.

However i just took it out for a 10 mile run. Shifted through all gears and she is back to normal. Found neutral easy, shifted fine. I'm gonna keep an eye on it and then rebuild my gearbox and clutch if it happens again.

Thanks for all your help.
