hi people. im putting a steve manney belt kit on and am having trouble with the order of everything on the clutch end as the manuals picture is next to useless, and i dont want to go by the previous owners guestimating way of putting things together. i have the new sprocket on and the inner primary.
does the large shim/washer go inside or outside the little circlip? lookin at it, i thought inside, then the circlip, then the shims.
and could someone tell me the right way the clutch plates go in, including the raised metal plate.
thanks guys.

The large washer/spacer goes outside the circlip. If you look at it, there is a groove on one side, this goes towards the circlip (it covers the circlip, and stops it popping out) , then shims if you need them. I use fibre plates in mine, and 4 fibre, 3 plain, lastly the thick outer plate, witn the flat side towards the plates. Check your stack height, you may need an extra plain plate depending on the condition of your fibre ones.

it will go , circlip, large spacer with groove facing circlip, shim's than clutch basket. start with a friction ( inner spline ) than steel, the steel plate with the raised rib is last for the spring to push against.

i like this forum. thanks guys! when i took it apart the metal plate with the raised part was on the inside, ill change that now! one more question. so the whole kit and kaboodle is nutted on the outside and pushes against that small circlip on the inside?

Yep, there should be a star shaped tab washer under the nut that you can fold over the flats of the nut when it's tight....it helps to use a drop of loctite too. Also, don't overtighten the nut or you'll shear the circlip....alllegedly! Most people seem to recommend 45ft/lbs for the nut

thanks again. knowing all that torque sitting against that little circlip i dont think ill ever take it out of the garage again :) . cheers ludwig, the bikes been on and off the road with me for about a year now. i think ive found most of the bodges on it, i hope.
still getting to grips with the way it all works on these bikes. the bonneville i had before seemed less quirky to work on, but ill get to know it one day. had some small probs with new bits not fitting, like a cnw head steady that needed the top mount milled out a bit so the holes line up to bolt it on. im begining to think that no commando was built the same and youve just gota make things fit. i was impressed though with the pazon ignition system, but not having the timing plate on the inside of the pri case didnt help! well its clutch together day tomorrow thanks to you guys, then the last job of a new set of commando specialties headers and muflers. wish me luck. cheers. john
