I have been using my recently purchased 72 Combat a lot lately, even commuting on it.
Since buying it i changed all the oils.
I noticed that getting into first was graunching and the change between the other gears changing down was a bit rough.
It was also slipping under full throttle

I read that ATF might be better in the primary so I drained out the engine oil that was in there and added the required amount of ATF.
I also adjusted the clutch actuator as per the book.

Was not much better. Taking up the slack in the lever helped a bit.

To me it seems like the clutch is dragging or not fully releasing.

Do I need better/ new plates?
or is there something I'm missing here.

thanks in advance
John
PS ...its much more fun to go to work on than my 2001 900ss..... :D ....apart from the gear changes.... :?

Possible issues,
1. Grooved up clutch center
2. Sheared clutch locating circlip
3. Loose clutch arm retaining ring
4. Loose clutch fixing nut
Edit
5. icky stick ooy gooy clutch plates

I had exactly the same problem. Removed, cleaned and replaced the plates.
Different bike. Do the simple things first ...

Hey John,
All of the above... You will need a Clutch spring compressor, at least, and possibly a Clutch locking tool if things are coming loose inside.
Possible the two different oils didn't get along. If you do need new plates, consider Barnett, they are very good.
AC.

the sticky plates ( dragging clutch ) are more likely from gear oil from the push rob leaking trans oil in to clutch NOT the primary oil. get a push rod seal while you have it apart.

You may want to review my clutch article:

It seems at least 4000 commando owners before you have had the same problem with their clutch.

Possibly try one of these:

You can get one from one of my retailers:

Mine did exactly that. Cleaning the plates and Dave's seal did the trick for me. Only took about a half an hour to do. 8)

Finally got some quality time in the garage....Made the tool for removing the pressue plate.easy peasy with the right tool.
Found the clutch plates all gooey and yukky with rust on the steels....probably from the previous owners storage.
I found it interesting that the friction plates are solid friction material and not composite.
Gave it all a good scrub in petrol and sanded up the steels to remove the rust.
Cleaned up the hub and basket and reassembled, added some atf and went for a spin. Could not believe the difference. :D It was cold an raining and I was smiling....
I fancy one of those push rod seal nuts.....on my wish list.....which is getting longer.....
Cheers guys for the tips.

The clutch drag on my 850 turned out to be from very thoroughly oil fouled Barnett plates. Cleaning them several times didn't help much. Fitting new Surflex plates and one of Dave's pushrod seal kits, fixed it.

Also, you don't need 7 oz of oil in the case. 5 oz is good, just enough so the chain hits it. Less oil = less oil getting on the plates. Forget where I read that, probably in the INOA Tech Digest. Or maybe here, a few years ago. Others have been through this stuff before us...

Dry clutch. Oil only for chain. Make sure 5oz's is enough to get the chain wet. I used to set the bike on the side stand and fill till it starts to dribble out the level screw hole. That seemed to be just right.

I said I "used to" do it that way.

Yes , agree with above points, Crazys clutch has recently been slipping under hard accellerations. Gearbox oil contamination suspected so will fit o - ring seal kit shortly. Any grinding in past has been notching in clutch center. B.T.W. the clutch bearing needs oil too ,not just the chain. Less oil is better in the primary. 7 th day of pouring rain here , I thought the big guy was supposed to take a rest after 6 ? 3 more days of it in forecast. Waaaah.
