what is the procedure for installing the clutch tool on a new spring. It seems the spring needs to be collapsed a bit first?

Put your compression tool on the new spring and tighten it down until you can see the disc flatten a bit. Then assemble the clutch. The trick is that you need to have it flat enough so that the retainer goes in without interference from the clutch disc. You will know when you go to put in the retainer if it needs more.

PVC cap is easiest, I was making and selling these for a while. I think I have 1 or 2 left.

I put the tool on and tighten until the spring can turn. Then you know it's safe to remove the retainer.

well said, just enough tightening so the spring can turn, I have seen the entire spring inverted from over tightening

Didn't someone do that recently. I've never done that, yet.

Old Jaguar pistons work too, but I probably have more of those laying around than most people... Most any piston around 85-90mm with a full skirt would work fine. Some pistons come with holes already in them, too!
