Clutch cable

Thank you sir! It appears the moron PO soldered on the nipple after threading the cable at the clutch end so now i won't fit through the hole to remove it! Grrrrrrr

The nipple should pass thru the hole after you remove the adjusting screw. Maybe it is just a blob of solder that can be filed off. Good luck!

Well I guess I can just cut it off if I am replacing it. I'll do anything to avoid taking that AMC outer cover off again! During re-installation I was ready to burn the damned thing :x

If all else fails Venhill also sells low cost cable kits so you can do DIY clutch and throttle cables....you need a solder pot to put the cable ends on properly but a 1/2" black iron pipe cap and a propane torch work great for that, there have been a few threads here on DIY cable making.

Sounds to me that PO soldered on the wrong nipple....proper one easily passes thru the 1/4 Dia adj. screw hole. You might as well cut it off....it can be heated and pulled off, but you will end up cutting off the cable end anyway.

Venhill's new cables come with adjuster and nipple already attached....no soldering required. just make sure you get length for your handlebars, and proper free length (the length of exposed inner cable required to engage the operating lever). Venhill has a form to fill out for a custom job. If you have a FAX, pm me and I'll fax it.

From your first post, it seems like you have plenty of cable....cut off the excess, solder on a new nipple, first making sure it passes thru the hole. bluto's post using a black iron pipe cap as a solder pot is a good one...use acid flux on the cable/nipple before dipping into pot. Thanx bluto', no more cable nipple soldering for me with a torch and wire solder. Thanx Venhill, no more conventional cables for me either.

One more thing...if you decide to solder on your own nipple, the cable end should be expanded AFTER you slip the nipple on....the nipple may strip off if you do not.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like DIY. Venhill wants 42 quid plus postage to Oz for a bespoke cable

You could go to your local British bike emporium and ask if they have cable spares like (don’t laugh) the correct nipples for your lever e.t.c.
It’s relatively easy to unsolder & solder on another nipple, and cut the outer cable to the correct length if too long. Just remember to tease out the inner cable over the replaced nipple before soldering, or it will pull through. HTH.

Where are you in Australia ?
There are probably a dozen stores that have brit stuff, and send overseas from Oz.
Particularly older dommies and even earlier Nortons (ES2's etc)
On ebay too...
And there is that place in NZ with vast supplies of stuff, cheapest in the world.
Or they used to be, maybe things have changed (they moved ?).

Below is a good guide from Flanders on how to make cables. If you make a DIY solder pot be SURE it is secure, that much molten lead could be dangerous if spilled...FWIW I clamped a pipe cap in vice grips, then clamped the vice grips to a workbench. I used flux and solder from a small plumbing repair kit and that worked OK.

Thanks for the follow up. Just measured my cable...its 75 inches long! I think its too long but I don't think the std cable is long enough...what are other Triton owners using?

What’s worse than having a cable to long :?:
One to short.
You have the option of shorting the cable, all you need is a sharp pair of pliers a hammer.
The outer cable should be cut first to length, then the inner cable inserted and allowing for the lever, nipple and small bit extra for the preening over the cable end prior to soldering.
A good bit of brute force to hit he plies with the hammer to cut the inner cable over some solid fence post e.t.c. will cut the cable.

FWIW bicycle suppliers sell cutters that will cut cable and housing cleanly, Park makes a good one and I'm happy with mine...definitely worth the $$$ if you have a two wheeled fleet.
Housing can also be cut fairly well with a cutoff blade in an angle grinder.
