Clutch cable lenght inner and outer

Hi guys I'm very close to finish the rebuild of my 72 commando,
unfortunally I had a problem with the clutch cable,
I was fitting an old Nos cable but the inner lenght seems too long
I thought the clutch cable had one only inner lenght for all models but may I was wrong...Who know?

could anyone tell me which is the correct inner lenght for a 72?

my bike has the 72 estended clutch lever holder and the USA bar
I believe the outer lenght should be 57" right?

Many thanks
Mario

I've got part number 06.0919 for the export clutch cable and housing length is 61 1/4" and cable length is 65 1/4". I've got a spreadsheet of all the cables if anyone wants it, but I haven't checked it, I found it somewhere. Includes Triumph and BSA numbers too.

Thanks Dave so the cable is 10 cm longer than housing as the one I have...but fitting on the bike I found it that is something like 2 or 3 cm too long even with the adjuster fully estended
any suggestion?
Datas of cables length could be interesting

I have a cable that I replaced that is 55" total and the sheath with the end is 51 1/2". I believe this is the right length for US bars.
A couple more inches isn't going to hurt much.

My free length of cable for AMC gearbox on an Atlas, is 7.5 cm from end of housing (outer sheath) to cone of trumpet nipple.

Overall outer sheath length is dependent on your handlebars.

What type of NOS cable are you using?

I was having clutch issues on my 72 and replaced the original stock cable with a NOS Barnett replacement clutch cable for part number 06-2813. The Barnett cable had about a 1/2" shorter inner cable than the stock one. I don't know if the old cable stretched that much or that was a difference found with the manufacturer. Either way it worked like a charm.

Mario,

Do you have the spacer at the end of the cable where it goes into the gearbox? If that's missing, you'll get about 1/4" or more less travel from the inner cable. I can't find a picture, but I can take one of mine later. I don't see that part in any of the books.

Yes Dave the cable has the spacer at the Gearbox, the cable still too long...
the length of cable on an Atlas, is 7.5 cm from end of housing (outer sheath) to cone of trumpet nipple as Slick said would fit perfect

Scott what is the length of your 72 cable?

Looks like that spreadsheet I have lies. I have a NOS clutch cable I dragged out. Sheath is 53 1/4" including the GB spacer, inner cable is 57 1/4. I got a couple a few years ago and one is on the bike and working fine.

I got an answer from Andover Norton
06.2813 is the correct part
51" outer housing length, 3.5" inner free length
They said are the same for all Commandos, of course with different lenght for clips on, hi rider, and other handlebars...
I have a cable with 4" inner free length
so as Dave said I do believe early commandos had a longer cable with a 4" inner free length
Who has the answer?
:)

Is Andover's cable pre-made with nipple attached, or are they being generous with free length to allow customer to fit? A free length of 3.5 inches is nearly 9 cm....that seems to be a bit much compared to DogT's pic, and my own. Are you allowing for the adjuster?

Slick

Yeah, my 'free length' is 4" if you count the inner cable in total that sticks out of the sheath. But if you just count the 'free travel', it's probably more like 2 3/8".
