I'm currently restoring an early 1968 Commando, and like everything else on the machine the original wiring harness is beyond hope. I want to replace it with a cloth wrapped like original and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on which company sells the best ones.

Thanks.

It's a good idea to put your location in your profile. Helps in the response.

Watch out for the Ausi stuff, it tends to arrive upside down.

A word of caution - I ordered a cloth covered harness from British Wiring in December of 2010. After three months of promises that it was going to be shipped within a week and myriad excuses, I finally cancelled the order and bought the harness from another vendor.

Just a word of caution here.
Cloth wrapped wiring harnesses have been discussed before -
- and COMMANDOES DIDN"T HAVE THEM !!?

Certainly the later models anyway, can't speak for the first ones.
Wrapped in plastic tape, with a bit of large diam plastic tubing was the best they could manage.

For most models, cloth wrapped "original" is a total myth.
Same with a lot of other bike models too.

Your bike though...

I do not have any knowledge of the later bikes, but the early Commando machines definitely had cloth wrapped wiring harnesses. The bike I am restoring now was completely original and the harness was cloth wrapped with a small plastic tube around the section that goes from around the points wires (at the coils) and the headlight shell. I also have an all original 1970 750 'S' in the shop that has a cloth wrapped harness on it (there is not too much wrapping left though).

My 69 had a mostly cloth harness. Just the points wires, the harness to the handlebar switch, wires to the stator and rear light had plastic on them.

I wonder then, when did Nortons switch from cloth wrapped harness to a plastic wrapped harness ?

Because it was cheaper, or the supplier started supplying them like that? It's really not a big issue unless one wants to be concourse for the year/model.
