Hi i am looking for a paintshop to paint my 1973 850 steel tank & side panels , I like the early 70s metal flake / candy colours , I live near Nottingham uk , looking for a paintshop who would have done similar jobs , Any ideas appreciated

Not painted a bike for awhile, since I was working in fact, and could just go ask the guys in the paint shop if they could pull a small job in.

Since then I have found a couple of decent paint shops in south Leicestershire that do nice work. In Market Harborough LE16 7AY, Iliffe Bodycentre 01858 431233 did a decent job on my car when required. The boss is a keen vintage car bloke - races a Riley if I recall. At least one of the guys is a biker too.

Not sure if any of my offerings do flake or other fancy finishes, some of them are hard to get hold of these days, and expensive when you can. You can but ask.

Then a bit nearer home for you is http://www.dream-machine.co.uk/contact.htm. These were considered a top draw place back in the 80's. Were considered a bit pricey, but I have no idea now. Every thing seems that way.

Jacksons in Loughborough used to have a good reputation when I was in the trade.

Google C & G finishes in Liverpool. They do specialist paint work on hand built bicycles and the owner Ged has a BSA A 10. He has done quite a few Norton tanks for me over the years and even did the pinstripes by hand freestyle. I can quite honestly say has work is brilliant.

FD Motorcycles at Great Dunmow did a fantastic candy on my T160 with excellent attention to detail. They don't (or didn't at least) do lining by hand. Ask for Nick. My T160 tank cost £250 about 4 years ago.

I also had quite a bit of work done by Colour Crazy based just outside York (my other UK T160 tank, all of my Norton Interstate stuff and all the red panels and tank on my Moto Guzzi Le Mans). I know that he has done metal flakes before for a friend which were excellent. On all of the tanks, I gave lots of fine detail as to what was required, and it all came back exactly as I wanted. If you call him, he doesn't sound really enthusiastic on the phone, but when you meet Richard he's really easy to get on with and listens to what you want, also quite reasonably priced. He only uses two pack as IIRC he doesn't think the cellulose stuff is hard enough wearing. He has a license for two pack incidentally. He can also re-texture damaged plastics as well as repair them. He doesn't do hand lining though.

There is Andy, (B-Bogus on here) who seems to know what he's talking about.

Mine was sorted out by a chap called Terry, a bit south of you, near to Milton Keynes, he is on 07900934634.

Give Terry at Precision Paint a call.

You won't get a quick job but what you will get is a quality job done by a guy that owns and understands Nortons. If you're near Nottingham he's probably 90 minutes away just off J14 of the M1. It's the wrong time of the year for spraying because of the cold & damp but if you're in no rush then it'll be worth the wait.

Which reminds me that I really need to give him a call myself because he's had my tank and side panels for quite a while and I've only got a couple of other things to finish off before I want to run the bike up :)

I've just realised that I've recommended the same person. He is good though and I've known a few people use him and none of them have said a bad word about his work.
