I asked Avon directly what tire pressures should be correct for Roadriders on a Commando, and they said 32 rear and 29 front.

interesting!

like you I also called Avon and asked what tire pressure for their RoadRiders

they told me 32 front and 35 rear, single normal weight rider

they said modern tires are manufactured under much better quality control than long ago
and therefore can, and should, withstand higher psi than in the past

I didn't call them to be honest, I emailed them, so I have it in writing!

Maybe both are in spec, just upper and lower ends?

I've actually put mine up to 32 / 36 as well just to see what it's like!

Apparently, according to the article: "The bikes did 3,000 jumps, and were also ridden along railway sleepers to see if they could break the frames. The frames would break the down tubes, and a lot of the testers ended up in hospital...."

You'd have to think that ONE tester ending up in hospital should have curtailed such activities, rather pronto...... !!

yep, I just checked through my past 20 years of notes and see that I called Avon the
week of August, 1997 and I jotted down 32 front/35 rear for their RoadRiders

and so that is what I have kept them at ever since, through five sets of their tires now

Hmmm, so the rider has run into the back of a taxi & on to the verge. Sounds like he needs some stern advice on rider re-training...

(Where's that tongue-in-cheek smilie?)

Avon recommended pressures for Roadrider 3.25x19f & 4.00x18r on my BMW R100RS are 32 & 36psi. I am running the same size tyres on the 920 Commando & using the 32/36 pressures.

I know tyre pressures can be a matter of personal preference and often subject to change to suit different riding conditions, but the Avon recommendation is 29F/32R for a Commando fitted with Roadriders.

Front Tyre
Roadrider
Pressure front:
2.0 bar (29psi)
Front size:
4.10-19 61H TT or 100/90-19 57V
Rear Tyre
Roadrider
Pressure rear:
2.2 bar (32psi)
Rear size:
4.10-19 61H TT or 100/90-19 57V

(According to the Avon website, the recommended pressures for a BMW R100RS [1977-85] 3.25-19/4.00-18 Roadriders is 32F/40R)

LAB, which Internet page did you get the tire pressure info from? I've looked high and low on the site I normally use but can't find pressure info!
The site I normally use is: http://www.avon-tyres.co.uk/motorcycle

You need to use 'Search for tyres', over on the right hand side of the Avon page you posted the link to, above.

Entering "Norton" and "850" should get you here: http://www.avon-tyres.co.uk/motorbike/8 ... r-commando

Or "750" : http://www.avon-tyres.co.uk/motorbike/7 ... e-roadster

"BMW", "R100RS", "1980", : http://www.avon-tyres.co.uk/motorbike/r ... s-cs-rs-rt

Got it! Thanks LAB.

A guy from Avons came to my local BMW club event to give a technical talk, he said that modern tyres require greater pressures than 40 years ago and said that you should go with the manufacturese recommendations . It's a pity that Michelin can't get it together to give me any pressures to use!

After first reading Dick Finchers report on his as new 750, I thought his tongue in cheek remarks were a bit harsh on Norman White. Re brake and smoking .

And his constant refs to his fireblade and Bmw were kinda nauseous , as obviously something modern was going to dust the 750.

I don't think he is enjoying paying the price for running a Mando . I await next months thrilling instalment to see how Dick ( or prick with the silent P) Fincher and Norman get on with the teething problems. Or he could just swop it for a Rambler and give us all a break!

It would have made better reading if he had contributed on the forum.

On that note I think I will Email classic bike, just for a laugh!

In the article the author writes that the "a week sees 3psi leak away which sets a nice weave going at 70."

I have to say that this sounds very much like "Dickie" is writing this carp to hit his word target and fill his column inches. I have to say that on occasion my tyres have dropped to approx 15psi front and 20 psi rear   and I have never had a weave. In fact my Commando is perfectly stable up to 110 mph (although not tested to this speed with above pressures), and I'm sure Norman White can set a Commando up at worst, as well as me.

The only other factor that might be different to my bike is that if it has it's original early type fork yokes that the rake/trail is very slightly different. Could this contribute to said symptoms?

If 3 psi leaks away in a week then something is wrong with the tyre, tube or valve. :?

(or tyre guage !)

After reading Classic Bike Jan 14 issue , the stripdown . dick Finchers crank cases were totally shot ,but it appears they have now found their place on ebay .

Sound sense tell the readers of CB they are shit and then stick them on ebay. FFS
