Many soldiers would probably not agree with the statement 'a just war is a fight for democracy'. However I suggest the only thing on this planet which is worth fighting for, is democracy. Fascism, Communism and other religions are usually authoritarian. I need to be able to express my thoughts and not be killed for thinking differently.
When you look back in history, most wars were actually fought because of differences in ideology. If barbarians accepted Pax Romana - the Romans did not kill them. The Crusades were similar.
In Maslow's 'hierarchy of needs', the highest level is self actualisation. I suggest that means 'the ability to be yourself'.
Both the war in the Ukraine and in Gaza are proxy wars. It is impossible to have winners in a total war which involves nuclear weapons. The wealthy elite are not supposed to get killed.
