I couldn't find a #78 drill in my little town. Don't know anyone with a guitar string. A friend who is a plumber had propane orifice cleaning bits that are that small, but they were too short. I measured a bristle from a wire brush I had hanging in the shop, and it measured .016, just right using needle nose pliers to get the job done.

Try McMaster Carr http://www.mcmaster.com and buy more than one. They are incredibly small and short . I went to a hobby shop and bought the smallest ID aluminum tubing I could find (about 6" long), used epoxy and also crimped the tube. This "handle" makes it possible to get into the pilot jet. I use mine every spring when I take the bikes out after winter. It works very well and with the handle I can find it in my toolbox.

The other thing that works well is (I'm not sure what they're called) the twist wire type things you find on some packages or to hold wires together in a new package. Strip a little of the plastic off, they're the right diameter, soft enough not to damage the jet and free :D

For a holder I use a spray can nozzle thingy. Free w/ purchase of most of the spray cans in the garage.

I bought the drill bit with (cheap handle) at Rabers for about 10 bucks. Seems to me if you use any type of wire, you are pushing the crude into the carb. If you use a drill bit CAREFULLY, you are pulling out the crude.

Isn't out better than in?.........ok everyone, get your minds out of the gutter.

26 gage copper wire is also .016. Safer than steel or drill bits.

All great ideas, copper wire would be less likely to hurt the jet, I love this forum, cheap is good!! Cj

Steel guitar strings are cheap! Good shops will sell them individually for people who want to build custom sets. Just tell them you need a .016 steel string.
You can probably get one for about 3 or 4 dollars. That or buy a guitar and save your old ones. Then you will have an endless supply!

Good idea, Thanks!

I don't even remember where I got that idea from, it could have been from the Tech Digest...

I'll give you the credit, didn't see it in the Digest. Just talked about wire and guitar strings, and how wire this thin would be not very stiff and a pain. Thing about these bristles is they are very stiff, just right for the in and out action.
