Chain oiler

I have an 850 Interstate with original chain oiler, as this is the only "leak" on the bike what are your thoughts about closing it off. If it helps occasional good weather mileage.
 
Even Norton conceded it was a bad idea and eliminated it on later bikes.
 
Semi-dry aerosol chain lubes are much better and cleaner. Plug it.
 
I tapped the oil tank chain oiler tube with a NPT tap (damn, don't remember the size), and screwed in a brass plug. That's only really an option if the oil tank is off, since you'll need to remove any metal bits from cutting the threads.
 
At speed, the drip strikes the chain and flies off to lubricate the shield behind the inner primary case.

Drip oilers are only effective on slow running chains.

Nothing good to say about the drip oiler.... or conventional chains for that matter.

I switched to a O-ring chain. Anything less is antiquated.

I have got over 50,000 km out of them on my litre-bikes. My 'bro has 70,000 km on his 1200 Bandit with the original chain.
if you do switch, put new sprockets on at the same time. Nothing kills a chain like a worn sprocket.

I did no modifications to get the O-ring chain to fit the Commando. I've heard the clearance varies between bikes, and a little grinding or filing is sometimes needed.
