center stand spacers

Being a newb to norton's, when looking at old britts i'm a bit confused about the spacers for the center stand on my 73 750. I don't trust the original hardware thats there, it's seems like a bit of a hodgepodge, so it's no real reference. Old britts shows two different spacers, do i need the stepped one or not? is there a way of telling looking at the stand? The stand is on and seems to work OK but doesn't exactly return so well (once it folds back i need to push it up the rest of the way with my foot) i don't know if thats just a worn out spring, but thought i would be safe and replace everything.

If no one pings back right away, give Fred a call and ask him why the two parts and which is for yours. Springs do loose some spring-ness and holes get wallowed out to loose some spring return too. I've had it both ways, snaps up with a clank or clanks bouncing off the road. Legs can get bend/twisted out of square pretty easy which don't mess with the retraction but does how level it sits or easy to put on stand.

Depends if your stand is the '750' 063051 [48] type, or the stronger '850' 064031 stand [54]?

The Old Britts parts descriptions for the stands are not entirely correct. 064051 and 061999 (spacer) should read: "750 only" and 064051 and 064057 (stepped spacer): "850 only", however if the stepped spacers are used, then the 850 stand will fit a 750. Some late 750 models also had the 850 stands-just to confuse matters.

Look at the difference between the two stands the Old Britts diagram. The 850 stand has side plates that extend to the crossmember.

Are the pivot bolts on the inside and nuts on the outside? If the bolts are on the outside facing inwards, the spring can catch on the end of the L/H bolt each time the stand is folded.

I upgraded mine recently to the 850 type using the stepped spacers. If you want to see what the stands look like then stop over sometime. The later (850 type) stand was a huge improvement. The spring actually holds the stand up and it doesn't bounce when riding. My old stand had been repaired and reinforced a couple times.

ok that clears things up. Mine has the supports that go down to the cross bar, so i'll order the 850 style stepped spacers. Thanks!

Russ,
looks like mine is the 850 style, but if i'm still confused after i get the parts i'll take you up on that, especially since i was cleaning my garage yesterday and realized i STILL have your giant socket i borrowed! Needless to say i'm embarrassed

It may be an idea to remove a pivot nut just to be 100% sure before ordering, but in any case the stand pivot holes can be drilled out to take the stepped spacers.

I had hat bushes [ stepped spacers ] made for both my bikes. I made them so the stand pivoted on one side of the bush, which was made lonbger than the widyth of the stand pivots. the other end of the bush I made to be a tight fit in the engine frame, but made the length of this section of the bush shorter thanthe width of tha frame. The hole through the centre is 3/8 inch on the 850 and 7/16 inch on the 750. different only because the 750 was done about 38 years ago and the 850 about 6 years ago. I put up with them for about 2 yeaqrs before doing the mods. I have never had a problem since.
I recomend you make your own because no manufacturer will know how much wear there is going to be in your bike stand.

good luck. :D
