If only....speak to any New Norton owner with clutch issuesThat whole set up just reeks of CHEAP.
Well that about covers most brit bikes back then.
Different era.
I found the easiest way to fit the spring on the centre stand was to fit it before putting the bolts in from the inside out. Put the bolt that is furthest away from the spring in first, then its easy to lever the stand pivoting on that first bolt, to get the second bolt in.

Swoosh... we’re #33 posts and a YouTube video into this...
Time to buy a spring a then see what’s what...
My spring stretcher is a length of 16 gauge wire tied at both ends to a 6" length of wooden dowel. Bike on its wheels on the side stand, me sitting on the floor. Loop the wire around the spring loop and pull with both hands while keeping my foot against the footrest, which keeps the bike from moving. A piece of masking tape on the stand with a sharpie line on the back side identifying where the hole is (the hole can't be seen from the back). It's easier with a helper holding the bike upright and applying the front brake.I’ve got a hook like that but this spring was too stiff for me to pull.
It’s not my fault you guys don’t have anything better to do than post all day.

I know you’re new around here but I’m pretty sure I’ve had threads go way longer for a lot less exciting issues.

Thats same method ive used on modern bonnevilles, for CS and SS. Good to know such methods are generally applicable.Since my spring will need to come off again the next time I’ll video the process. I’ve tried it several ways and hooking the spring up first is by far the easiest.
I liked it so much I just went and made one out of 6mm reinforcing rod. Of course the short handle on one side is intentional ...

Well, I heated to cherry and then quenched it, but at the base of the hook it's still 4mm so will take a lot of pulling I would say. Just waiting for an excuse to use it now....Does that get hardened so it won't bend?
Fast Eddie, usually the only time you need to refit the spring is when you have had the stand off. Why bother?
Does a stock replacement spring (like those from AN) stop the stand bouncing against the frame, or does it need a different / stronger spring?I do believe that most center stands were removed because of noise from bouncing against the frame. Stronger spring definitely would help . I have a 70 commando S,also a 67 BSA with a center stand that works very well. The commando stand was already remove at the time I bought the bike. Making my own hardware to reattach it.
