I have an offer of a Norton featherbed dominator centre stand with the casting number 17174 cast into it. Does anybody out there know if it is for a wideline or slimline frame :?:
many thanks for your reply.

Centerstand would be the same, I believe...

I thought the only difference was in the upper frame rails?

I have a 61 Manxman (so its a slimline frame) project that I'm slowly trying to bring back from the dead. The last 3 digits on the stand appear to be 173 but it's not perfectly clear.

The part number for a slimline centrestand is listed as 17175, for 1960-62 at least

Be surprised if that was the actual number on it, Nortons never did clever things like that. ?

I also have a stand with 17173 on it....

That is correct Rohan, That advert was listed as pre-fetherbed cenerstands. As you said, I'll bet he has the answer :)

Unless you KNOW he has the answer, this avenue could be a wild goose chase....

I have parts books for 1956 and 1961-62. The part numbers for the center stands are different and the dwg for the wide line shows cast side pieces have one bend while the slime line has a double bend. It might help.

What is the quoted part number for the wideline one ?
The casting number and the parts number aren't usually very far apart...

It's possible they can be interchanged, and that the newer slimline version is somehow improved...

The parts book for 1964 has different stands listed for the 88SS & 650SS to the one for the 650, 99 and Atlas.

So maybe they don't interchange, and aren't an improvement ?

If you don't ask, you'll never know. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I just sent him an email, we'll see what comes of it :D

One quick thing to look at right away is the two cross-pieces on the centerstand. On early Bracebridge Street centerstands the lower cross-piece will be about .500" diameter, on the later AMC centerstand it will be about .875". Also the early stands might have a small diameter lever that curls around the exhaust pipe you press down on with your foot to put the stand down which comes right off the left foot of the stand, the later AMC stands will have a much heavier lever that comes off of where the lower cross-piece is brazed in.

An early featherbed stand may have two casting numbers on it, one for each cast side of the stand, 17173 and 17174. A later AMC stand I have has only the 17173 number on it, and a stand a good friend of mine has from a 1953 wideline looks identical except it has no casting numbers at all and it also never had a cast-in lever for the foot but some other arrangement that was fabricated and added.

From looking at the wideline and slimline stands directly their measurements suggest they are functionally interchangeable despite small differences in detail over the years, they have the same outside width at the top where they go between the frame lugs and bolts and they have the same length from the center of the pivot holes to the bottom of the feet, about 10 inches.

The above suggests what I have been saying, that they are possibly interchangeable, and that later models were improved. It will be nice to get confirmation on this...
