After looking at another thread that has gone off piste a bit, I had one of my Flatslide carbs blow right off the stub when the bike backfired while kickstarting in a filling station. No fire but it was a potential incident. The advantage was that there was a good supply of fire extinguishers available but also a good supply of gas. Makes you think about carrying a small fire extinguisher to stop your pride and joy vapourising in front of you. Jim's video shows a lot of onlookers doing sweet FA and the guy who removed the tank had big "kahunas"

Hmm... Maybe that´s what happend to me here, on the way home from a rally in Germany???

This one from Kidde is compact enough to go in a top box or good sized tank bag but big enough to actually do something.

there is enough back pressure to blow a carb right off the rubber manifold with clamps?

damn!

There are some small handheld ones that you could keep in a tank bag or a back pack... I haven't seen anything small enough to fit under the seat or in the side cover.

If it was under the seat or behind a cover you may not have time to reach it if you needed it and the longer a fire burns the harder it will be to put out an so would need larger extinguisher to do so.

Over here in UK, Lidl and Aldi often have small extinguishers, I would think easy enough to make up a mount on the bike, but I guess leaving one on permanently would just invite theft!!, I guess thats why people want one to fit in a tank bag or such like?,

Ya can use a CO2 tank or even the CO2 tire fillers for a few seconds of pretty good blast than can blow out-cool-frooze a begining fire. The powder kind make a terrific mess to clean up. Here's past forum scope on mc fire snuffers. If ya really really freaked out you may be able to blow it out, but start at the bottom or may die on 3rd attempt after it relights.

I'd sooner think it's the weight of the carb/air cleaner hanging way out there off the rubber boot. I see it all the time on sled engines which shake WILDLY in their soft rubber mounts at IDLE. The OEM airbox (in the aforementioned application) supports the carbs on the inlet end. When the airbox is jettisoned, and K&N's fitted, similar things happened. I've made suspensory devices from cable ties and bungie cord remnants.

I have a bike that has a habit of doing that as well, not a Norton though. The fix or rather the prevention in my case was to make sure all of the exhaust joints were completely sealed to prevent air being sucked back in and making it backfire

carry one in all your vehicles....I do...have put out fires in two other's vehicles..thankfully not any of my own.

I was once standing on a street corner in Dallas, when a Mustang, 1/2 block away went "ploof", and flame erupted from the hood. There was a fire call box within arm's reach...I pulled it and checked my watch to see how long it would take Big D FD to get on the scene....two minutes....I think that is very good! The Mustang had burned down to a shell by that time!
The Fire Department was very helpful....they put out the burning tires.

A fire extinguisher on board would have save it.

nrgmarine ain't well marketed and the fella put a lot of his life in development so give him a ping directly and work a cash deal on more than one.

I've had close calls on various craft, both my own and strangers and know what i like best now, CO2 gas blast with frost layer that just evaporates though the blast effects can spread burning embers. Decent to full size CO2 in garage, kitchen/fire place area, shed and in PU and car.

I'm gonna snag a pair of these foam type rattle cans on sale and carry on bikes in compact case/wrap behind grab rail.

You should probably wear a 3-tank backpack style when you ride: water, dry chemical and CO2. That way you'll be prepared for Class A, B, C, D and K fires. Oh, and make sure you wear your Ghost Busters T-shirt for full effect!

(Typical Norton Commando rider shown wearing his Barbour riding outfit with safety reflective stripes, Kidde fire suppression "quick response backpak", and combination "Commando" style spray nozzle with stream and fog settings.... sold only at better cycle accessory stores)

The PFE1 from these guys is great. I used the first one on my old Ford pickup with the leaky fuel hose and bought a replacement that I carry in my bike. Jim

Those PFE-1's look interesting. Too bad they are not available for sale over here that I've found. Kind of pricy too.

Well, that 50 dollar flashlight that I carry in my tankbag has certainly given me 50 dollars worth of piece of mind if nothing else. I don't like fire. Jim

Don't get me wrong Jim, I agree with you. But it would be nice if I didn't have to pay a premium because they're not available in the USA. I have an extinguisher that I got on Amazon for 2 for $20 that is about the same size. Just don't have tank or side bags on my commando...it's naked. I keep my extinguisher velcroed to my motorcycle lift... The only way I could realistically ride with it is to keep it in a backpack I guess. It would look rather stupid attached somewhere to the bike.
