thanks for all the input, everyone. spit-balling replacement parts puts me at about 80 GBP before shipping on the amal website (which doesn't include slides+bores). as rewarding as i think it may be to rebuild them, i think the time i would spend on that fight is worth the rest of the balance for a replacement pair (particularly considering there's no guarantee they'd work terribly well at the end of all that time, money, and self-flagellation).

Where are you located?
If you are in North America, then Jerry Doe owner of this site, is the person to contact. He will supply new Amals with all the right jetting/slide cutaway for your Commando and his prices are good. Make sure to get the Premieres, they have anodized slides.

Not only do they have anodized slides, they also have a removable pilot jet that can then be easily cleaned. The crap they cal petrol/gas these days will evaporate in very short order and clog them. My BSA with a new premier ran a bit rough after sitting a while so I pulled the pilot jet cleaned it & all is fine. Not so easy on a old carb..

Correct, and I also forgot to mention that the Premieres have a better float, the "stayup " puncture proof variety plus Viton tipped float needle.
