"Build Thread" for my 1974 850

Nice work. I’m starting my restoration 74 850. Lot of things similar to what I’m looking to accomplish

I look forward to watching your build. I see you are in Canada. If you have any questions regarding vendors, PM me. Have fun with your build!

Hi All.
I’m making my way through the wiring. I changed the reflectors under the tank to LED running lights. They are pretty close to the size of the original reflectors, and I will be happy to have some increased visibility. My horn button is not working, so I have to chase that down now, and get to that Tri-Spark Install.
I am getting close now.
Cheers,
Gatsby

Hi Everyone!

I am at a stand still waiting on my tank and covers. They are still currently at the paint shop, but the progress has been as my painter wants to ensure that there is no cracking. They currently have 14 coats of flake and clear. I am waiting for a local artist to hand paint the silver stripes, and then the tank decal and stripes will be cleared in. I put oil in the tank on the weekend, and tidied up the cables and wires. I awoke to a puddle of oil under the tank on Sunday, and I realized I did not tighten the oil filter bolt tight enough, and that was causing the leak. Below is a picture of the side cover with 14 coats that my painter sent me, and a recent picture of my bike. I am starting to get excited for the first start.

All the best,

Gatsby

That paint with the beautiful polishing job on the rest will look fantastic.

Ok, I’m not a painter, so I’m sure that the answer is obvious to those who are!

But… why 14 coats ?

Hi - I am not a painter either:) However, my painter told me that for every coat of flake, he needs two coats of clear to sand through. Without the clear coat buffer, the sanding would rub the metal flake that was on the surface. Plus, I think he also wanted to have some fun with it, and get some nice depth.
