BSA Gear shift spline repair

Has any one used one of the repair shafts that are sold to fix the damaged spline, a friend has one that he wants repaired, what method of repair have you used?, I thought bore the raplacement shaft and spigot the old and press together, with possibly a small weld, any suggestion?
 
This pic shows how to do it, best go for a big weld not a small one as they do break loose if the weld is not deep.

Thanks, are they spigotted or are you just aligning and welding up?
 
Spigoted, turn the old one down and drill the new to accept the old one, one option I have never tried is to drill all the way through and weld on the top as belt and braces. Depends on how heavy your feet are :mrgreen:
