BSA A65 'single'?

Puch had a 2-stroke "twingle" on the market in the late 1950's for a while. I think it was either a 200 or 250cc engine. A friend in college had one. My impression was that the configuration was rather pointless, as anything with a Villiers 197cc engine could out-run it.
 
I often wonder about MotoGP bikes and whether the extreme angle of lean in corners with big sticky tyres is the quickest way around. In some past years, lower performance bikes have been successful buy using different handling and power characteristics. I suspect the riders have made the game become one where the bikes are 'one size fits all'. There certainly seems to be a prevalence of ex-motocross riders, if that means anything.
