pulled up at the shops today only ducking in for a few minutes so went to put the 850 on the sidestand and had just let go of the handlebars when i heard this cracking sound and down she went ,i caught her on the way down and did no damage, luckily i wasnt in the shop. I have never really liked the sidestand as it looked like the wind would blow it over it was on that much of a lean so i think i will just leave it off,,much more solid on centre stand....

I would assume that the bracket welded onto the frame has broken has it?
I would be suprised if the bolt had managed to snap if it was of a suitable grade.

I use my side stand 90% of the time personally and the angle of lean isn't all that much, and I don't have any concerns about its suitability. Based on what you've said it sounds as if the bracket has been bent or sprained if it "always looked as if the wind would blow it over.". Possible causes are sitting on the bike with side stand down (probably a previous owner), or starting it "badly" with it on the side stand.

IIRC Old britt sells new side stand brackets and will supply a template so that it can be positioned and welded on correctly.

I'm pleased you saved it from damage though.

P.S. I just realised, I use my side stand 100% of the time as I have a 2-1-2 exhaust system and therefore no centre stand.

na never start on the sidestand(button start),i will take a photo and post it when i can,it has a sort of round end on the stand like it fitted over part of the frame or bracket, one of the sides was worn through probably 3mm thick so it didnt look very solid,,i will have a better look tommorow, but i reckon the centre stand is easy to use once you get the knack of using it.
