Broken key in ignition

Broken key in ignition

I managed to break off my ignition key in the switch while kick starting the bike. I think that I have mislaid the spare key so even if I could extract the broken key from the barrel I will have to replace the barrel - or the switch. Buying a new barrel would be the cheaper option, but how do I extract it from the switch? In the photo you can see a hole into which you can push a screwdriver - I can see a little raised part to push on, but the barrel does not seem to want to move. Any thoughts? Or do I just buy a new switch?

If you turn the barrel until the release pin lines up with the hole then you should be able to press the pin with a tool and remove the barrel. Penetrating fluid may help if the pin is stuck.

The key (or at least the broken part) needs to be fully inserted in order to extract the barrel, which is normally done by pulling on the key, however, in this instance, you may have to lever/pry out the barrel.

I found that an upholstery pin works very good for removing broken keys from locks. Depending on how the key is broken a locksmith might be able to use the pieces to cut a new key. If you have an original key the numbers on the key should identify the blank and cuts. I know that a Yale key blank (from my Corbin seat) will pass in my ignition switch and would probably work with the correct cuts. The bottom line is it just might be cheaper to get a new lock with some spare keys, unless you have access to a cheap locksmith.
