BPF LED Performamce

Been running one of these double dipper BPF led bulbs in my Commando to reduce power draw and improve lightning. Quite happy with it as a daylighter, as it gives a nice white output quite visible in full sun, making my urban riding a wee bit safer. Had it out on a dark road for first time lastnight. Results mixed. Good light spread across full width of two lane roads, not blotchy at all on low/dip beam. Main/high beam does not add much at all, about 20% more light, mostly at a high position. On dip, I could see maybe 150 feet down a dark road, and maybe 180 feet with high beam. Not impressive when compared to my Bonneville running an H4 type 3000 lumen Lumiled led which runs off its own high voltage supply box and has flexible copper ribbon heat sinks. I guess there's only so much output possible at 12 volts.
BTW, this is with the small 5 3/4 ” lamp for Hirider, but would not expect much difference in the larger roadster shells, as total output appears to be the issue.
Overall, I give this bulb a decent rating for urban riding day and night, as it makes you more visible to traffic in the well lit city streets compared to stock 45 Watt incandescent . Maybe not a great choice for rural trips where maximum range is a priority.

Thanks, good review. For me, the better daylight/less power draw would be great. I don't intentionally ride at night because gentlemen do not! :)

I noticed the same with mine on the dip/hi thing, and, from what I could make out, it leaves the dip illuminated the entire time, but adds an additional narrow beam above for extended reach. I did quite a write-up on mine from a couple of years ago, and still am enjoying the bright, almost blue light it puts out as compared to the H4 Halogen bulb. The reflective signs and stripes really pop at night! As for my earlier write-up, I haven't been able to access it since the website was changed some time back. I'll get with Les to see if it's possible to get a link.

Take the keywords out of the link, which should include the title of the post, and paste them into the forums search. The thread should then come up. I do this all the time for old bookmarks.

So what does that make me for doing the test ride at night to get this LED performance checked?
